Growing Up
I stared at my phone looking down at the text, deciding whether or not to keep the argument going. I decided to apologize and end the conversation, not knowing what would happen in the future between us. Everyone experiences friend loss; I just didn’t think it would be this bad. Whether it is a loss of a close friend or a small acquaintance, friendships come and go, which is a key moment in the coming of age moment. The loss of friendships is shown in the two texts Ortiz Cofer’s, “American History” and Jessica McBirney’s, “Growing Up Key Moments.” Experiencing the loss of a friend is part of the coming of age process because it allows people to learn valuable lessons and to mature.

One of her main points was about fading friendships: “Betrayal breaks trust and can cut off a friendship completely; it can take a long time to recover from the hurt it caused. Realizing that not all friends are for life is a huge growing up moment” (McBirney 5 - 6).
