The ongoing issues of gun violence throughout United States history have caused a great deal of debating whether personal gun possession should be outlawed. Among those debating over gun control include ordinary citizens, members of Congress, lobbyists, and other government officials. Currently, Congress hasn’t made a final decision regarding the 2nd amendment, which allows citizens the right to bare arms. Government officials have offered solutions and laws to prevent further gun violence but acts of gun violence are still being committed. A century later, debates over gun control has become even more prevalent than ever in the United States. Many people against gun control believe that it is their right to bare arms since the 2nd amendment allows them to own guns. Supporters say that gun control laws would prevent individuals from defending themselves and their property lawfully (“The Controversy of Gun Control”, 1970). The 2nd Amendment specifically states, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment was added to our Constitution because the founder believed in private ownership of guns was necessary for protection of our liberties (“Debate Pro and Con of Gun Control Regulations”, 2008). Congress has passed laws banning certain individuals such as criminals, people with mental illnesses, and those under a certain age from obtaining a gun. Unfortunately, there have been instances where young people and deranged gunmen have acquired weapons and used them to commit mass murders (“The Controversy of Gun Control”, 1970).
