In April of 1945, The Battle of Okinawa took place with over 150,000 casualties. When all the American soldiers retreated, one man stayed behind and helped save 75 men without firing a single bullet. The movie, Hacksaw Ridge, is about a young man named Desmond Doss who saved 75 men without killing anyone due to his Christian beliefs. The most prominent theme in the movie is that even when everyone in the world seems against you, you should always stick by your beliefs and to do what is right. Three main examples of this from the movie are when Doss stands up to Sergeant Howell by saying he would not touch a gun even though he was being ordered to. Sergeant Howell then proceeds to turn all the other soldiers against him, with hopes that Doss will quit, but Does refuses to quit. A quote from this section of the film that comes from Doss is, “I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe.” This quote correlates back to the thesis because even though he is disobeying direct orders from his military generals, he won’t listen to them because they are asking him to do something that he doesn’t believe is right.
