A father’s success depends on both the actions he takes for the good of himself and the decisions he makes for the good of those they love. A father’s success is not displayed monetarily or superficially but by the impressions left on his children. Haileab, from Of Beetles and Angels by Mawi Asgedom, makes decisions for the good of his loved ones and this is reflected by his words and actions. Being selfless is being able to put others' needs before your own. This trait is very admirable because it allows people to help others without wanting anything in return. It also allows people to put others' well-being before their own. First, the Asgedom family flees their home in Ada Wahla, Ethiopia due to war. Next, the family moved into a Sudanese refugee camp where they lived with famine and disease. Then, Haileab and his family are accepted to move to America and begin their search for a sponsor. Finally, a world-relief caseworker named Beth met the Asgedom Family and sympathized with Haileab and Tsege’s pain caused by their travels and life in America. Haileab’s selflessness is shown in Beth’s recount of her first impression of Haileab. Beth stated, ““I still remember looking at Haileab and Tsege’s eyes and seeing the deepest pain,” Beth reclass, “the pain of people who have been torn away from their loved ones, from their culture, from their place in society, from everything that has ever given their lives coherence and dignity”” (Asgedom 22). This shows Haileab’s selflessness because the reason that he made many sacrifices, such as leaving his home, his family, and his life in Africa, was for his children’s futures and his family’s safety. To be clever is to both be intelligent and quick. Being clever is a very useful trait that allows you to think outside the box and formulate plans in a natural way. A clever person may be calculating and intuitive in the solving of problems, which can be helpful in many situations. First, there are two brothers in their twenties by the names of Temesgen and Kibram. The brothers very recently moved to the United States. Next, the brothers move out of the Asgedom house, where they lived for the first few weeks following their arrival. Then, the young brothers, being new to a first-world country, and not used to some facets of life in America, get into trouble over ruining a bush and flooding their apartment. Finally, they ask for Haileab’s help to settle the matter in court. Haileab then uses his knowledge of people to save the brothers from their punishment. Haileab’s cleverness is shown in his response to the accusations against his friends when he says, “Or is it fair to blame the landlord, who did not take even one second to show them how to take care of his home?” (Asgedom 128) Haileab shows his cleverness When he sways the judge in his friend's favor. Haileab used his knowledge of people to make the court sympathize with the brothers. Their sympathy allowed the brothers to avoid harsh punishment.
