The island of present-day Santo Domingo and Haiti was originally named Ayiti (meaning mountainous land), by its inhabitants. From 1492 to 1696, Ayiti became Espanola, meaning “Little Spain”. Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who settled the island under Spain, named it after the Spanish crown. Within the period of 1750 to 1914, changes were taking place around the world. New empires and nations began growing and expanding their territory, and as a result of these actions, wars, bankruptcy, and rebellions became more common. An example is the American Revolution, in which the American colonists, who were influenced by new philosophies and the sense of nationalism, fought and gained their independence from Britain. This revolution eventually inspired others throughout the world as it was successful in gaining the colonies independence from a powerful European empire. Those revolutions include the Haitian and French Revolution.
So, if helping the people who are struggling, puts their citizens lives at risk, they usually choose not to. Such as America not helping the citizens in North Korea, if America were to help that would put them at risk of starting a war and no one would want that. Barry R. Posen writes in the New York Times writes, “North Korea may have as many as 250 missile launchers. Some of which could fire nuclear tipped missiles. If some of these mobile units were dispersed at the time of an American attack, it’s unlikely that the US could destroy all of them before one fires a missile”.

Even if they cannot go in person, many Americans send food, provisions, clothing, and money to many less fortunate countries. Despite many beliefs that Americans are selfish, ignorant, and blind to what goes on in the rest of the world, truly the majority of Americans are good people who are able to work together to help the lives of others when disaster
How can any one person or group of people decide whose beliefs and morals are right when there will be so many different societies. I do believe we should help others, but we need to focus on our own country, how can we convince others to work together and co-exist with us when we can’t even do it among-est ourselves. We have people right here in our own country living in poverty and abuse that don’t receive help. Why spend billions of dollars to help other countries, spend that on us and our country. Let us set the example for others and
In third world countries such as those affected by the flooding, the poor infrastructure and increasing poverty makes for a far more drastic aftermath for those subject to the destruction. Donation towards both causes contradicts the Utilitarian belief system in the sense that it maximizes pleasure for a smaller amount of people while minimizing it for the remainder of the affected population. While the total cost of recovery in the South Asian countries exceeds that of Houston by nearly 300 billion USD, the number of people affected in South Asia exceeds that of Houston by 38 million. The $100,000 donation could provide food, basic shelter, and medical care for 1,000 people in Houston and 4,000 people in the regions of Bangladesh, Nepal, and India. Considering the fact that the money could help four times as many people in South Asia supports the Utilitarian belief in bringing the most amount of happiness to the greatest number of people.
