In the play “Hamlet,” the important theme is revenge as it is considered as a revenge tragedy. Revenge plays a substantial role specially to the plot’s evolution throughout the play. The plot mainly focuses on the characters that are seeking revenge. In the play there is three main revenge plots. Throughout the play, Prince Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras are the characters that are seeking revenge. All revenge tragedies have a ghost, and in Hamlet’s play it is the ghost who asks for revenge. The prince of Denmark, Hamlet is motivated by his father’s ghost to avenge his father’s death. As Prince Hamlet plots over and over to revenge on his father his indecisiveness and overthinking everything always make him fail. He keeps delaying revenge and finds excuses not to do it. An example that shows that Prince Hamlet always finds excuses not to revenge is when he had the chance to kill his uncle after the plot that Prince Hamlet made by using the play-within-play to make sure that his uncle is the murdered of his father. His uncle was alone praying seeking for forgiveness, Prince Hamlet had the chance to kill but he keeps convincing himself that if he killed his uncle during praying he will send him to heaven, which was an excuse not to revenge. At last, in the end of the play Prince Hamlet revenges his father’s death and kills Claudius by forcing him to drink from the poisoned drink. Another character that was seeking revenge is Laertes. Laertes is the son of Polonius he was seeking revenge on Prince Hamlet who murdered Polonius accidently thinking that it was his uncle who is behind the curtains not Polonius.
