Revenge is an easily recognizable theme throughout the play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. Hamlet goes down a path of destruction after being told to revenge his father’s murder. Consequently, Hamlet’s actions as revenge are never justifiable. They are seen as misguided actions. Revenge can cause people to have an increase in hatred, make irrational actions, as well as cause more problems than intended. Revenge is an emotion that will never leave a positive impact on someone’s life. Revenge leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths commonly known as hatred. People aren’t thinking strait and end up doing something out of anger no matter the consequences. Therefore, people will commit an action purely out of grief and revenge. For instance, Torres, a man who had lost his nephew due to murder and is grieving. Throughout his life he has learned and grew up with the knowledge that if someone hurts you or your family, you then retaliate or go through with a retribution. A retribution is also known as revenge. (Kotlowitz, 379). This just shows that in some communities or even lifestyles that revenge is an irrational action. There is no thinking involved. Revenge for them is so simple. A task of revenge is completed with no thought process of the problems it could cause or blow back. On the other hand, in The Odyssey, when Odysseus came home from the war he was disguised as an old man. He then comes home to find other men in his home trying to marry his wife. He then proves he’s Odysseus and kills them all. (Homer). This is an irrational action of revenge. He comes home to find random men trying to get with his wife and his first action is murder. It proves that revenge is truly misguided. That nobody truly thinks about what their next move is. Only what they want the outcome to be.
