Hana's Suitcase Play Analysis

On Wednesday October 14th, 2015 I, Vanessa Francisco, had the privilege to go see the play Hana’s suitcase, along with my classmates. It was held at the young people’s theater downtown, and was written by Emil Sher, and directed by Allen Maclnnis. Hana’s suitcase was a drama, yet very mysterious and it was great. The play was mainly about Hana and the difficult life her and her family had lived during the holocaust. It was very interesting and there was never a minute were I didn’t want to watch. Hana’s suitcase was about this young Jewish girl, whose name was Hana Brady. At her young age, she along with her brother got sent to concentration camps to live a hard life. Since there was a young audience they had some funny moments in it which would ease the children down if they had gotten a little frighten because not many know about the holocaust. Although I did not like how at times it was a little to childish as one of the characters, akira, who was being played by Jeff ho, was very blunt and loud, especially since they are speaking about such an important topic, holocaust, and in no way is it funny. I’m not saying that he was trying to make holocaust funny, but he was just very over the top considering the mood of the play. Otherwise I enjoyed all the other actors and the way they portrayed there character. I understand that they are trying to accommodate everyone’s needs in the play, but I felt as if they could have made it a little more mature considering there are older viewers. Costumes were all nice, and fitting for each character. My favorite character was definitely Hana, who was being played by Caroline Toal. She portrayed Hana amazingly well and really got into character. Hana was such a strong individual, even during all the hard times in her life and that is really what drove me to like her so much. The set of the play was very dull and boring and I think they should have had more props to portray the scene. Especially at the museum it didn’t even look like one, because they had no other props around! I personally was
