The book I am reading is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. I predict that the author will explore the human rights issue of Immigration Laws and the plight of illegal aliens in the United States. I believe that this issue will be important in the story because Enrique the main character in the story is very driven to find his mother who has gone herself illegally to the United States to earn money to provide an education for her children and to better the life of her family. I made this prediction because Lourdes leaves her children in Honduras as she goes to make money in the United States and her son Enrique is left saying “Donde esta mi mami?” “Where is my mom?”
While reading Enrique’s Journey, written by Sonia Nazario, a lot of themes were brought out throughout the book that served different meaning in Enrique’s story. The theme that stood out to me, was his journey because Enrique traveled all the way from Honduras to find his mom, who stayed in the United States. There are times in the book when he falls victim to his own shortcomings: doing drugs, tantalizing his mother, mismanaging his finances. He is ready to take yet another journey, this time marked by responsibility instead of adolescent rebellion and resentment. However, Enrique's journey is not only physical, but also mental as he grows from a boy to a man.
Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario is the story about a boy in Honduras whose mother left him to pursue a better life in America. This story encompasses the coming of age period of Enrique’s life and many of his experiences can be related to by other children, even in different situations. Nazario develops an interesting novel that both documents the journey of Enrique to the United States but also creates a dramatic tone like a fiction novel would have. Through her diverse use of rhetorical strategies, Nazario was able to explain the positive and negative effects of family relationships through the life of Enrique. She does this by utilizing different literary devices, most evidently, nomos, in which she relates with the story and also opens
Hardship shapes people, it changes them drastically. It’s as if they go through metamorphosis, they are completely different; things like their religion can easily be affected by this. When human beings are stripped of what makes them human, they have little left.
Enrique is the central character of Enrique’s Journey authored by Sonia Nazario (2007, 2014). Enrique’s journey is a touching account of the repercussions of an economically distressed society and the effects that this circumstance has on the citizens of Honduras. Enrique is five years old when his mother Lourdes is forced to leave Tegucigalpa, Honduras to the United States where she believes she has a better opportunity of earning an adequate amount of money to support Enrique and his sister Belky. As years pass, Enrique becomes more disheartened and decides to take the dangerous trip of traveling North to be with his mother.
In real life there are many hardships that face us everyday, making our lives more difficult. Hardships are something that happens in everyone 's life, they teach us valuable lessons that make us wiser by giving us a different perspective on life. The experiences that many of the first colonists endured when they first came to the new land; America, were extreme. They came from a place where they had all of the materials and equipment they needed, into a place where they were they were fighting to stay alive everyday.
Lourdes, Enrique’s mother, loved her children as every mother does and did anything in her power to provide for them even if it meant to travel 1,619 miles into a foreign country. Many parents like Lourdes have left their entire families for job opportunities and risk their lives through the dangerous journey but they have the hope and motivation because of love— love for their sons and daughters. Even Enrique found himself doing the same for his soon-to-be-born baby which was one of the components that made him persevere in his
Life is full of influences, everyday we are inspired or tempted to make a choice in our life. One thing that may influence your life is hardships, which could lead to major changes in our life. An NBA player by the name of Dwight Howard went through major hardships when he played for the Orlando Magic. Dwight was a superstar player at the time, but feuds between his coach and teammates caused his team to convert to one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Hardships can change a person’s life. Even though someone may be going through a difficult time, it doesn’t mean they have to leave the situation empty handed. Hardships influence people 's lives by teaching them valuable life lessons they will never forget. Dave Ramsey, was a young married man with children when he decided to get into the real estate business. He was smart, and quickly worked his way to the top and became a millionaire, but just as quickly as the money flowed in it went out.
Barriers throughout someone’s lifetime could shatter them, or help them to build and become a better person. Either way, it is a decision one makes on their own. Some people’s hardships are worse than others, but that does not mean it was not tough for them to handle. Conflicts could even help shape the person going through a tough time. Simone Biles was determined to become stronger from her challenges, mentally and physically.
The author chooses to detail five different benefits of overcoming hardships, and one quote states: “The result is enhanced concentration, peak performance, and more confidence.” The use of the noun “enhanced” shows that due to overcoming hardship, many things can be enhanced such as resilience, and in this case concentration. This supports the theme of overcoming adversity to be stronger, as you can become a better person, have a healthier mindset, and be aware of or try to prevent future hardships. The use of the noun “confidence” adds on to the statement, supporting the theme of positive self improvement. Moreover, this also proves that over the course of overcoming hardships, you gain skills and change for the
The Hardships in Life As we grow up, we learn to solve our own problems and overcome the hardships we face. A good example is Frederick Douglass’s hardship of learning how to read and write, and how he overcame the situation that he was by working hard. Likewise, obtaining my US citizenship is my hardship I am facing. Like Douglass, I must find a way to persevere and find a solution to my hardship.
Enrique said "they really screwed me" talking about the men who beat him up and kicked him off the train. This really shows how hard it is because Enrique had just failed for his sixth time and has to try again another day he keeps telling himself that he will make it at some point this shows him struggling to go to America. Another quote that made it more complicated for me was on page 47 a man is talking about who when the people take this journey they deserve what ever comes to them even death, the man specifically said "this is what they get for taking this journey." This made it more complicated because you would assume that people would want them to succeed and not fail but it's the opposite they don't care for them they think what they are doing are crazy and they shouldn't be complaining and just live there lives. This book was a very eye opening experience for me and my views on immigration it mad me rethink what immigration really is and who is affected because it's not just the people immigrating its
The Roman poet, Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Horace argues that difficult circumstances critically impact the development of one’s character. Although some may argue that character will reveal itself regardless if adversity is present, I agree with Horace’s perspective, adversity determines one's potential capabilities, strengthens personal values, and provides a feeling of self-worth. Sure, there are cases in which prosperous circumstances lead to internal development.
There were many events throughout American history that have shaped our nation into what it is today. Though some of them were a rough patch at the time it only brought us to a brighter future. Many stride have been made for American citizens. A few of these events are the Gospel of Wealth, Women 's suffrage, White man 's burden, Espionage and Sedition Acts, and the Harlem Renaissance. These are just a few example of how hardship leads to better times.
