Harlan Granger was a well respected white man who owned vast amounts of land in Mississippi during the Great Depression (1933). Although Mr. Granger owned so much land, he still wanted the 400 acres that the Logan's owned. Nevertheless, he was a greedy man who would do anything to regain possession of his land. To be greedy (greed) is “an intense or selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food” (Macmillan) There were three incidents in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry that depicted Mr. Granger’s greed. The first incident was when Mr. Granger threatened them because they had been shopping at Vicksburg as a form of protest. Taylor uses direct and indirect methods of characterization to help her readers understand the characters. Mildred Taylor used several of these methods to help us understand more about Harlan Granger. Harlan Granger is a well respected white man who owns vast acres of land. (RoT 139). During a political situation, he threatened the Logans for shopping in Vicksburg. Next, he said that he would not allow the men to hang on his property, but if he they took T.J. somewhere else, then they would be responsible. Mr. Granger is a white man, thus showing that he will side with his race. An indirect method of characterization that Mildred D. Taylor uses, is when Harlan Granger went to visit the Logans about shopping in Vicksburg. When he threatened them, Papa responded with a cold glare. Cassie also thought that Harlan Granger was greedy for wanting their land so badly. (RoT 89). When Uncle Hammer had driven over the bridge, the Wallaces touched their hats in respect, thinking that it had been Mr. Granger. (RoT 139).
