The Importance of Freedom of Speech

Every person deserves the right to speak about whatever they want, whenever they want. It does not matter if the person is rich or poor, good or bad, because all opinions matter. Freedom of speech is a person's right to express their opinions as much as they please. Just like in the novel “Haroun and the Sea of Stories”, the enemies, the Chupwalas, made a vow to be silent. The author shows that without their freedom of speech the Chupwalas had a difficult time to communicate and express themselves. Salman Rushdie wrote the novel “Haroun and the Sea of Stories” to inform the reader that having our freedom of speech is important for making good connections with one another and to understand who we really are.

Mudra, the Shadow Warrior, cannot speak because he is from the land of Chup, he has a hard time communicating with Haroun and the crew. When Haroun and the others were first introduced to a Chupwala, this is what occurred, “The Shadow Warrior’s hand movements became agitated and a little desperate: he twiddled his fingers into different positions, held his hand at different angles, pointed at different parts of his body…” (130). Freedom of speech is highly important so everybody could share their thoughts, it does not have to always be a grand idea, it does not have to be good, a person's opinion is their own and nobody could correct them for it. People having the right to speak is important for communication, people uses their words to other to show who they are and what their vision of the world is like. Without our freedom of speech people will not be able to speak their words and build connection with each other. If people were to vow to stay silent like the Chupwalas, society would not be the same as it is
