What is a hero? A hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. There are many people who meet the characteristics of a hero, but Chris McCandless is not one of them. There are many reasons that prove why McCandless does not meet the characteristics of a hero and there is many other people who do meet the criteria of a hero. My idea of a hero is a someone who takes on large tasks and shows great bravery in his/her character.
Harriet was the creator of many of the paths on the underground railroad, as well as she acted as an escorter of cargo (Slaves on the underground railroad). On her numerous trips, she saved more than 38 slaves in a span of 10 years” (Document B). She risked 10 years of her life and her freedom to save these people. After Congress Enacted the Bloodhound Act Harriet lead 8 rescue missions, traveling approximately 400 miles past police (Document A). She was the Moses of the underground railroad taking slaves to New Canaan ”Canada”.
Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. The fact that she knew the land of the south very well was extremely helpful for the runaway slaves when escaping through the Underground Railroad (Maschi). According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.
The Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman was considered to be the “conductor of the Underground Railroad.” Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1819 or 1822, in Dorchester County, Maryland. “Her Birth date is unknown as paper records of slaves’ births were not kept at the time. Araminta Ross also known as Harriet Tubman changed her name to Harriet, after her mother and adopted her last name from her husband.

What was Harriet Tubman’s Greatest Achievement? Did you know that escaped slaves would travel over 300 miles just to go from the south to Canada? Harriet Tubman was lots of different things she was a spy, she was a nurse and caretaker. But I believe her biggest achievement was the underground railroad which help slaves travel to Canada from the South.
However, she was not for her entire life. She escaped from slavery by running away to a free state, Pennsylvania. She conducted the Underground Railroad to help other slaves escape to freedom. She worked as a spy to help the Union Army, the north side, in the Civil War. She struggled against slavery for her whole life.
Harriet not only lived a life of saving slaves, but her accomplishments also varied from there. Document E says Harriet took care of,” The aged,... the babe deserted, the epileptic, the blind, the paralyzed…” (Emma Telford). One
A hero is anyone who makes the right decision to sacrifice for a person in need. For example, without heroes like firemen, wildfires and house fires would spread across the nation, costing lives and loss of worldly possessions. Firemen stand strong, risk themselves, and protect all for the well-being, safety of others, and personal property. In addition,
Undoubtedly, Harriet Tubman was the most influential abolitionist of the early to mid-1800s. Born a slave in 1820, Tubman escaped her plantation in 1849, and returned 19 times to rescue over 300 enslaved people. Tubman was called “Black Moses” because she, like Moses of the Old Testament, led her people out of persecution and into freedom. She had narcolepsy (a mental disorder that causes one to fall asleep randomly) but still served as a nurse, a scout, and a spy for the Union during the Civil War.
A true hero is a person that takes other people’s lives over their own and saves those lives in the risk of their own. Harriet is all over that definition. She saved over 300 people and not one person that she took with her was caught or killed. Harriet was an abolitionist, who lead the movement to end slavery. Many people declined that statement, but it is true.
“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” -Abraham Lincoln. As this quote says, our ancestors’ intention for this land was that all humans would be treated the same way; equal. But this world didn’t end up like they wanted.
Harriet’s first escape was a success but she had to leave someone very dear to her. We know this because the article “Harriet Tubman” states, “In 1848 she escaped, leaving behind her husband John Tubman, who threatened to report her to their master.” It can be inferred that it must have been difficult for her to leave her husband behind but one thing is for sure, she was determined to escape. Eventually, Harriet decided to help other slaves escape and made many successful missions. This is proven by the text in the article “Harriet Tubman”, “Over the following ten years she made about twenty trips from the North into the South and rescued more than three hundred slaves.”
Harriet Tubman is a larger than life icon and an American hero. Harriet was born into a family of eleven children who were born into slavery. Benjamin Ross and Harriet Greene were her parents, and lived on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet was put to work by the age of five, and served as a maid and children’s nurse. At the age of six Araminta was taken from her parents to live with James Cook, whose wife was a weaver, to learn the skills of weaving.
There are various approaches to describing a hero. There is also an infinite number of individuals who can be defined as heroes. A hero can be a person who demonstrates valor. A hero can be a champion. A hero can even save a life or even mankind.
