The 1850 Moses
Araminta Ross was a leader and important figure during the civil war. Araminta is known as Harriet Tubman, the name she gave herself in honor of her mother, after marrying John Tubman at 24. She was also known as Moses for her impressive record of never losing a person on the many trips she took to liberate people on the underground railroad. Sentence idk Harriet was an outstanding person. Her strive to help others and lead them to safety was what led her to be the historical figure she is today.

She worked as a conductor for the underground railroad for over 10 years after she escaped. She took many trips back to Maryland to help free her friends and family. Due to the often change of location while working to liberate other slaves, Harriet never seemed to have a place to call home. However, in 1859 she decided to make Auburn, New York her home, community, family, and friends. In 1827 slavery was made illegal in New York and only about 7 years later the Underground Railroad was established (https://www.nps.gov/hart/learn/historyculture/why_auburn.htm). Tubman’s first mission was to rescue her niece and 2 other children. She found out they were up for auction and sent a free man who was a family friend to “outbid” everyone else once he had the children secured he got in his boat and quickly sailed away before the auctioneer could notice he had been tricked. The children were brought to meet Harriet in Baltimore where she hid them for a few days before leading them to Philadelphia. Overall Harriet lead about 13 missions and freed about 70 slaves. She first helped as a cook and nurse, then she worked as a spy and even an armed scout. Where she led an expedition in the war. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition, here she freed over 700 slaves (https://www.npca.org/articles/2314-5-facts-you-might-not-know-about-harriet-tubman). Tubman partnered with colonel James Montgomery. Together they commanded the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers which consisted of all black men. They also planned a raid on the Combahee River. There were about 300 men and Tubman was able to round up 8 scouts. During the night of June 1st, 1863 The 2 leader guided 2 gunboats toward the Combahee River.
