She was born a slave but that did not stop her from changing the world. She started a revolution not just for the African community but also for women. Her name is Harriet Tubman and through her work on the Underground Railroad she helped bring freedom to many enslaved people in the United States. She was called Moses by the people she led North because she delivered them to a land flowing with the promises of America: life, liberty, and freedom (Slavicek, 62). Harriet Tubman was an advanced thinker in the way of civil rights. She began a movement to prove that all people should be treated equal which was carried on by many activists to come. Harriet Tubman was an influential character in American history because she took part in a movement to bring freedom to African Americans and power to women. Harriet Tubman was born between 1820 and 1822 on a plantation in Maryland. She lived in a slave home and began her work as a young child caring for her younger siblings while her parents labored for long hours (Slavicek, 12). Growing up as a female slave, she spent her earlier years doing housework for her master and was sent to work in fields when she got older (Slavicek, 15). After ninety miles of walking and many hardships, she reached Pennsylvania where she became a free woman (Edison, 11). However, Harriet had a selfless heart and she immediately thought about the thousands of slaves still being persecuted in the South. During the 1850s, she became one of the Underground Railroads best conductors; leading approximately 300 people to freedom (Edison, 15). Harriet used secret codes to send messages to slaves about escaping through signing (Slavicek, 68). She would lead slaves to safe houses and eventually to the North then she continuously went straight back into danger to rescue more
