Harriet Tubman, born and raised as an African American slave, wrote history. Using her bravery she single-handedly brought more than 1,000 slaves to freedom in the north. Not only did she help free slaves using the underground railroad, but she was a nurse, cook, laundress, and a spy for the Union during the Civil War. She received a medal for her bravery from Queen Victoria of England in 1897. Harriet Tubman was an unselfish and brave woman. Leading slaves through slave territory and she never lost any of them. “There was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive” (Hillstrom and Hillstrom). She was born in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was born into slavery and was one of 11 children. She got her name from her mother, and Her parents names were Harriet Greene and Benjamin Ross. At age seven her master hired her out to a woman named Miss. Suzan. She had worked there for a couple of years then got sold back to her old master. In Harriet's teenage years (nobody knew the exact date), a man tried to escape and she got ordered to tie him up. She had refused to do it and got hit in the forehead with a heavy weight and got put in a coma for weeks. Sadly Harriet Tubman got no education, but her parents taught her to read a little. After the Civil War Harriet Tubman ent to live with her parents in Auburn, New York. She died March 10, 1913 in Auburn, New York. She past away because of pneumonia and lived a great 93
