Its starts a time back in history were many did not agree on many things that were not right or strange to others eyes. Whether it was the color of people skins,what you believe in or what you like, things like that were main reasons numerous of people judge or saw you different from everyone else. A man seized for change for himself and his people was Harvey Milk was he was a gay activist and politician .In the past the ideal American politician was a Caucasian married man. America has always been a country of power, thought, and change, but to have all those standards many as individuals have had to fight hard and sometimes lose their life in the process.

Soon after Milk, became involved with the Castro Street community helping out with labor organization groups.
Milk at this point had grown popular not only within the gay community but with many minorities (The Times of Harvey Milk). In 1975, Milk took running for a seat in the city’s council as a serious matter. He was now focusing on helping out small business and helping Castro Street grow in population. A great promoter of Milk’s campaign was the new mayor George Moscone. The new mayor made Milk Board of Permit Appeals in 1976. He had become the first openly gay politician in office (Black, 104).
Harvey Milk was a man of revolution. He shined a new light on the gay community. Taking away the stereotypes the gay community was labeled as. Milk also broke through barriers that prevented gay men or women to run for office. He helped minorities have a spotlight as well. Milk was able to reform many laws the constricted the gay community and minorities. He was able to let police officers work without discrimination. People all over the United States were able to form better ideas of a homosexual person. People had a better reaction to the gay community. Milk was the poster child for the gay community. Now people could have realized that being gay doesn’t make you less of a person but it’s the same as being straight. When Milk Harvey was shot and killed by Dan White in November 27, 1978, light was shown on how good people are killed for simple matter of standing up for their rights (Black, 105).
