The Old Testament of the Bible is not outdated, despite what people want to argue. We are still humans, and, unfortunately, we still make poor decisions. This is evident in the article: “Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades” published by the New York Times. King David was not the last man who abused his position of power. When news stories in today’s world parallel events of the Old Testament, the wisdom in the Bible should be taught to avoid making the same mistakes.
The obvious connection between Harvey Weinstein and the Bible is King David’s sexual assault of Bathsheba. Both Weinstein and King David were powerful men well-respected in their professional settings. Much like how King David sent soldiers to bring Bathsheba in for a visit, Harvey Weinstein would meet with actresses to discuss their career, like a role in a movie. Filing a sexual assault report is not an easy task. The women face doubt, disbelief, and reluctance. Even if the report is filed, their assailant may not receive adequate punishment. King David himself looked the other way when his son Absalom tried to avenge the rape of his sister. Absalom became quite frustrated with his father, so imagine the frustration of assaulted women trying to get help from Human Resources.
This is a pertinent issue in society and in workplaces. Human Resources and legal representatives are meant to care for the well-being of employees, but far too often they want to keep sexual misconduct under wraps. Harvey Weinstein’s team accomplished this for many years, but they could not stop the news from breaking in the past few months. These many incidents of the past have – rightfully so – brought damage to Weinstein’s reputation, and, had he learned the story of David and Bathsheba, perhaps he would not have mistreated those
