Aware did a study with five hundred respondents and two-hundred and fifty two of them said they had experienced some form of sexual harassment in the workplace (AWARE). This statistic shows that over half of the employees had experienced sexual harassment. In the recent months, sexual harassment has become popular in the public eye because of the social media outburst when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted out and told everyone to use the hashtag “MeToo” to show how big of a spectrum sexual harassment has become; which has helped band victims together and have a sense of community. The hashtag helps spotlight that all stories matter and all voices will be heard and addressed. The tweet helps influence people to empower other victims to come out and share their story that should rightfully be heard. This makes the accuser seem to be lying because they waited too long to release it. Though they wait years, they could have kept quiet to protect their family. Every workplace should create their own personal rules or workshops required by all employees to help everyone understand what sexual harassment is and how is should be addressed in the workplace, which, in return, will help the false accusations from surfacing. The more rules set on sexual harassment will help both with the harasser and the accuser because no one wants a claim on them nor does anyone want to handle the punishment of a false accusation they created. Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, and along with others have “teamed up to launch an initiative aimed at combating sexual harassment inside and outside of their industry” (NPR).
