In the book Hatchet written by Gary Paulson Brian the main character displays great signs of determination. He was trapped in the middle of nowhere with no one to help him. He has to be determined to keep his life, and most importantly to keep his sanity. At one point in the book he ends up creating a fire “I have a friend, he thought—I have a friend now. A hungry friend, but a good one. I have a friend named fire.”(Paulson 30). To make this fire he had to be determined to survive, without the heat from the fire he would have died of hypothermia. Another part of the book where Brian is very determined is when the camp he built ended up getting destroyed by a tornado. Brian was determined to rebuild it and make things the way they once were before the tornado struck. In his mind he was thinking, "But there is a difference now, he thought—there really is a difference. I might be hit but I'm not done. When the light comes I'll start to rebuild. I still have the hatchet and that's all I had in the first place."(Paulson 146). He was hurt, but he still had the motivation and determination to rebuild his camp. …show more content…
At one point my mother worked two jobs to support us. You could say that she was determined to keep our childhood fun and to keep us healthy. Even if it meant spending all of her day working, and even taking care of us children. She put aside her temptations to go out and live a fun life just for my sisters and me. My mother is a great representation of the word determined and is still working hard being a single mother to us three girls. My sisters and I have all had our problems dealing with mental health, and even substance abuse. She has always stayed by our side and was there to help when we couldn’t help
