Gary Paulsen, the author of “Hatchet” describes one of Brian’s traits by using actions. As stated by this quote, “When he was done he covered the two piles with grass he tore from the lake shore to keep the flies off and went back outside”, (69) Brian used his surrounding environment to produce an answer for a complicated problem. An ordinary person wouldn 't thought of a solution as quickly as Brian did in this particular situation. The answer for this problem seems simple, after you have figured it out. But it’s not simple while you’re looking for it.
Unbroken is a biography about World War II veteran Louis Zamperini, who was a former olympic track runner who survived a plane crash in the pacific ocean. Spent up to 47 days drifting in the ocean. However that wasn’t even close to how long he spent as a prisoner of war in three Japanese camps. Louis had an interesting , and suspenseful life, but he managed to survive which is the surprising part of it all. This book gave us an insight into Louis Zamperini’s life about how belief is the most powerful, if not essential part of growing and overcoming crisis.
Have you ever experienced being alone for a long time? I am not talking about being separated from your parents in a grocery store, I am talking about being alone in the wilderness. The book I just read, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, has a main character who is the only soul who survived a plane crash and now he is stuck alone in the Canadian wilderness. There were two times that Brian had deep feelings that really stood out to me. I am now going to tell you about one of the time Brian had really deep feelings.
[7] In his book, “Missoula,” John Krakauer analyses the issue of rape in the college town of Missoula. Krakauer begins his work by quoting the article False Allegations of Sexual Assault: Rape is unique. No other violent crime is so fraught with controversy, so enmeshed in dispute and in the politics of gender and sexuality… And within the domain of rape, the most highly charged area of debate concerns the issue of false allegations. For centuries, it has been asserted and assumed that women “cry rape,” that a large proportion of rape allegations are maliciously concocted for purposes of revenge or other motives.

The Gilded Ones, by Namina Forna, is a fictional book about a girl named Deka, she was born with darker skin and impure blood, but in her village impure blood was not allowed, so she was beheaded by her father and became a demon. There can be some parallels drawn between the real world and The Gilded Ones. In the book, the characters face real world challenges and learn how to overcome them throughout the book. A parallel in the book is page 149, of the book it states “Our whole lives we’ve been taught to make ourselves smaller, weaker than men”. I believe that this quote represents sexism, in the real world men are treated as superior to women, consequently, they’re “ stronger”, but when we appear as stronger than men they tell us we're being
The quote that Handful says to Sarah in The Invention of Wings, “My body might be a slave, but not my mind. For you, it’s the other way around” (Kidd 201), displays the obvious inequalities towards women and African Americans during the early 1800’s. The quote shows that not only is Handful a slave in the novel, but Sarah is as well. Sarah is trapped in the mindset that she cannot make a difference in the world and believes her dreams of having a profession are unrealistic due to what others think. The quote is very important because it helps Sarah realize how imprisoned she is in Charleston and how she can never make a difference in the fight for justice for others due to women’s status.
Shame is defined as a painful feeling that arises from the consciousness of any sinful action. It is known as the most painful feeling there is, given that it is registered within the brain as if it were a strong physical pain. As demonstrated within the book, The Shack, the main character, Mack seems to experience this emotion more than once in his life. Thus, referring back to the foreword, the storyteller, Willie, explains Mack’s grief over his conviction of the period at which Mack confessed that he hadn’t done anything to help his mother when his drunken father had beaten her till unconscious. Mack ran towards religion when he made that confession to a church leader after reluctantly baring his soul at a youth revival.
So do you ever wonder what my favorite quote is from the story, “With a little help from my friends.” My favorite quote is, “They wanted to know about more important things, such as camels. How many did we own back home? What did we feed them? Was it a bumpy ride?”
The command economy, beginning in 1920 is an economic system where the government determines what goods are to be produced and the price range for those goods. In this case, the focus is the Soviet Union under Vladimir lenin and other soviet leaders. The Soviet Union’s weaknesses and Military burdens eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet Command Economy. The Soviet Union’s weakness’ was the lack of societal attention, bad manufacturing, and the lack of agricultural advancements and farming .
“In this situation, I expected every hour to share the fate of my companions, some of whom were almost daily brought upon the deck at the point of death, which I began to hope would soon put an end to my miseries….” (Equiano 87). In this essay I will tell you about some things that you need to survive. Faith, resources, and fear are what I’m going to be telling you about. I will be using quotes from two stories I read that taught me about the hardships of survival.
