If you were trying to raise a family with very little money, would you be able to provide and care for your children? Well in the story “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls this scenario is happening throughout the entire story. The father Rex Walls grew up in bad conditions and did not want his own children to deal with the things he had to go through. Although Rex Walls is still poor, He still tries his hardest to be a good parent and provide for his family and give them some of the things he never had growing up. Throughout the book we learn alot from Mr Walls that we could incorporate in our own lives. Mr Walls exhibits good parenting by which he is resourceful, a family man and teaches great morals.

“All of dads Engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project”(25). This special project was not only his dream but also his families and this quote shows how he wants to use his intelligence to build something just for his family which is very kind and shows how much he cares. Mr Walls also loves solving problems so when he “Finally worked out how to deal with the lack of sunlight on the hillside”(238) he was proud of himself. This also shows that he is very intelligent and always looking for things to improve. Another way Mr Walls is resourceful is seen through this quote "Dad said one of the dealers had figured out that he had a system and had put the word out on him”(33). This shows how intelligent mr walls is, he managed to find a way to cheat the system at a casino and make tons of money for his family. Whenever Rex would win big at a casino he would instantly buy stuff for his family. “At the end of the day, Dad came to get us, his pockets full of money. He bought us cowboy hats and fringed vests, and we ate chicken-fried steaks...”(33). This shows how Rex takes his family very importantly and wants to please and provide for them. He could have bought himself nice clothes or something of that sort but he decided to make his family happy. Another prime example of Rex providing for his family is when his daughters were stuck at school having no lunch. There was no food at the house so the kids went to school with no lunch boxes but Rex noticed this and felt awful. Evenuntally “Dad appeared in the doorway, carrying a bag of groceries”'(79). This shows how even though Rex could have done nothing he decided to find a way to provide for his family. Even though there was nothing at the house Rex hustled it out just for his family and ended up providing it like an amazing dad would. “He showed us how to straddle a wild dog.. But he assured us that as long as he was around we wouldn't have to defend ourselves”(24). This shows perfectly how Rex would do anything for his family as long as they end up being safe in the end.
