Hatred of The First Amendment
Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.(cite)" As Americans, we’ve been known to heavily value our “Liberty and Justice for All,” but is it really true to us? Freedom of speech is a 1st Amendment right, with that comes all different types of free speech. One of these types of speech is hate speech. The definition of hate speech is: “Speech that attack a person or group on the basis of attributes such as race, religion, ethnic origin, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or gender.(cite)” Why is the attack of a person verbally, due to a difference someone doesn’t agree with, a constitutional right?

Freedom of speech is one of the foundations to our liberty and pride. We, as Americans, are free to express what be believe in, no matter if you’re more liberal or more conservative. If we take away a form of free speech, that’d take away part of our freedom and liberty. Look at how America reacted when talk of enforcing more gun laws came up. Whether there was any stock behind it or not, everybody jumped to polar opposites on this issue and fiercely starting defending their own beliefs. I remember vividly how much hate and arguments came about when I simply made a post about gun control on my social media. People automatically became defensive and misinterpreted my words into starting an argument that swept across Portland. People i’d never heard of/met came to my post either defending it or pointing out all the issues they had with it. If everybody gets freedom of speech, why are only some opinions listened
