Within the HCAP model, hope is the driving force behind behavior. Hope focus in the model involves an individual’s ability to look to the future and make decisions that will move them forward to it. Hope not only influences how people interact with their environments, but also how they set and accomplish goals. Hope is needed for change. A lack of hope can result in a person staying in one place and not being able to move forward within their daily lives. Another reason hope is important to the HCAP model is because hope provides the framework for things such as commitment and accountability. Without hope, commitment and accountability are not possible. Hope is an essential part to everyday life. Hope strengthens mental stamina and provides individuals with a way to understand what they are going through. Each individual needs hope in order to live a better life; whether the hope is maintained through religion, counseling, or other means, it is a necessary aspect to daily lives.
