The huge attack of Iraq on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 left an everlasting impact on the US. On this day many fatalities occurred and much sadness fell upon the world. The first plane of terrorist flew into the North Tower, with a couple of minutes between the second plane flew into the South Tower. The effects of this disaster on the United States were many, including the immediate aftermath/roughage, the airlines, the economy, and the ongoing wars.
When I began my journey in search for a secondary education that would fulfill my desires I did not know where to begin, but I did know one thing: I wanted to get out of state. I was ignorant and believed that I was too good for the state from which I was raised in; I wanted to leave everything behind and see what the world had to offer. I kept this mindset for months upon months until my worrying parents finally managed to coax me into looking within Illinois for my education--it is at this point where I would stumble upon Illinois State University. I had heard multiple friends express their interest in ISU many of whom would call dub it their dream school. By researching ISU further, all of my misconceptions about in-state schools were dispelled.
I should be considered for the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Scholarship because I have proved and accomplished more than what I thought I would be capable of in my education, I am passionate for the health industry, and I financially need to be to succeed. I will continue my education by pursuing my goal to become a Registered Nurse. I first considered Registered Nursing when I joined the Health Academy and realized how passionate I was to help others. Throughout my years in the Health Academy, my passion grew drastically. My summer of 2015 was dedicated to two internships; one being a Medical Assistant (200 hours) and another as a Physical Therapy Aide (80 hours).

There are many jobs and fields in the healthcare career. Some people may want to be a Oncologist, Gynecologist, Neurosurgeon, Registered Nurse, or a Certified Nursing Assistant. Every person has a different passion and reason they want to be what they want to be. While some people may want to work as a doctor in trauma, I want to become a nurse practitioner and work in some type of pediatric field. Yet, becoming a nurse practitioner is not that simple.
In hindsight this made me want to be part of the team that could save lives. I am aware that the degree that I wish to undertake will be a demanding course that requires dedication and commitment. Being an HCA has not only given me practical skills and made me competent in my ability to take on this course but has also given me compassion and understanding for the caring field. People have a personal potential to live up to and standards to live by, but everyones’ differs. Deep down, I know I have a high potential to find a career in the health field and become successful at it. I, along with other people, know that I set high standards for myself because of the potential that I hold. The health field attracted me due to its nurturing nature in taking care of others and logical thinking with problem solving. With health care you can have good health care that is more expenisve and you can have a less expenisve health care. I think that the it is better to have more expensive health care because you will get you moneys worth with good benefits h =whereas if its less epensive more people can afford it but it wont be as benficial. Health care is for if you ever get into an accident if you have health insurance it wont be as much of a hospital bill. it can help cover ambulace fees , hospital fees, and surgery bills.
The U.S. healthcare system has undergone significant changes since its inception. In the early 20th century, healthcare was mostly delivered through private physicians and hospitals, and few Americans had health insurance. The Great Depression brought about new challenges, leading to the creation of public health programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. These programs provided healthcare to vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those living in poverty. George Mossley ( a Harvard grad in public health) mentions that in the 1980s and 1990s, healthcare costs began to rise, leading to the development of managed care plans.
Many insurances play a significant role in healthcare primarily Medicaid insurances. Many studies have shown barriers to patients seeking primary care after ED visits due to their insurances. A study done by the Yale- led study have demonstrated that patients with Medicaid insurances and who had hypertension and back pain were less likely to receive post ED primarily care immediately. This event was interesting to me as I have previously worked in the emergency room and seen how patients have struggled with getting appointments at their primary physicians so would appear to the ER for help as their health got worse. Many patients that were seen at the ER were Medicaid or no insurances.
Up until 2010, low-income families or those with chronic illnesses faced barriers to obtaining access to health insurance in America. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) changed that by legislating health insurance options for millions of people who were lacking affordable health coverage. In this discussion board, I will discuss how the ACA relates to access, equity, quality, and cost. I will also look at what health care reform means to the uninsured and underinsured, what the impact is of limited access to vulnerable populations, and what nurses can do to increase the awareness of civil rights in health care.
In becoming one, I hope to accomplish many things. I want to be able to utilize the skills and knowledge that I have developed and apply them to the best of my ability in the care of my patients. By doing so, I will make an impact on the lives of every patient that I meet. Furthermore, I will continue to learn throughout my practice by continually researching new proven methods of care and eventually contributing to the improvement of health care in the future. As a first generation student to attend college from a family of seven, the journey to a higher education has been arduous and overwhelming. My family gives me all the encouragement I need and are very optimistic about pursuing a higher degree. Unlike myself, my parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. My parents were born and raised in a small town in Mexico where the highest level of education they received was fifth grade. I have worked since I was 14 years old to support my parents with bills, and also saving for college and my own vehicle.
