Throughout the book, Brett reveals himself as a tough, hero willing to do anything such as defending and protecting patrols overnight. Not until later in the book, Jack (member of Brett 's squad) was injured and taken to Dr. Morgan 's clinic. He reported that Jack had been severely injured and could not do anything about him because of the mass amount of internal bleeding. At that point, Jack explained that it was Brett and his squad who set the people in the tent on fire. Herb and the committee waited for Brett to arrive and he confessed it.

The author uses revenge as a clear theme, specifically in the ending of the book The Roundhouse. Joe takes revenge on his mother's attacker by killing him with the help of his best friend Cappy. Although revenge was accomplished in Joe’s mind, it did not make the characters, such as Joe and Cappy, feel any better about their situation. However, after he and Cappy, had committed the deed, they did not feel happy, it wasn't a sweet revenge at all as they both had haunting nightmares of his mother's attacker in their dreams. They are both afraid and insecure after their kill and felt nervous around almost everyone.
Hindley’s evil nature is further evident after Mr. Earnshaw dies and Hindley becomes Heathcliff’s guardian. In “The Crucible”, Arthur Miller presents a city named Salem, with contradicting people. Throughout the story people accuse others of being witches or being involved with witchcraft so they could be hanged. Miller presents the idea that vengeance ruins people’s lives or reputation so that you can get what you want and be satisfied. Some people take revenge to protect themselves; they are scared of what would happen to them but they still do it or in this case, they accuse.
In “The Scarlet Letter,” the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, depicts Roger Chillingworth as a man that is out for revenge. Chillingworth comes into the story and immediately comes to realize that his ex-wife has betrayed him by sleeping with another man. Chillingworth wants to avenge his pride by finding the man that did him wrong by sneaking into his personal life and torturing him under his nose. Some scholars even suggest that Bronte modeled Heathcliff after Dickens in all aspects of his life. Heathcliff fits perfectly into this frame at the beginning but soon takes a turn for the worse. Starting as a slave, he caught a bit of luck and was bought and freed, then he became rich, inherited two houses and stomped over as many people as he needed to do it.
The amount of anger and frustration expressed to keep their marriage together is emphasized by the rhetorical device.
