There are many people who affect the blind and deaf community. So many people dedicate their lives to improving the blind and deaf circumstances in this world. Although none of them can come close to being compared to Helen Keller. She had some of the greatest accomplishments of a blind-deaf person. She was the first person with deafblindness to earn a college degree, Keller paved the way for people who struggle with problems like what she dealt with today. Furthermore, she influenced and inspired the world. Helen Keller was by far the most significant advocate for the blind and deaf. She did everything in her power to help and provide a better world for people struggling with these problems (Keller). One of the ways she gave people hope was by bypassing huge milestones for herself. She may have been blind and deaf, but she was determined to do anything other people could do. Helen learned sign language by the time she was seven years old. Then shortly after, by the age of ten, she learned to read and write. She also completely understood the braille system and could use it. Another big accomplishment she achieved was learning how to use a typewriter. These personal accomplishments she achieved provided encouragement and hope for people struggling with similar disabilities to hers. It showed them if a young girl with blind deafness could do it, than anyone can! Another big thing Keller did that changed the world was she co-founded an organization for WWII veterans. It was specifically for the veterans who had been blinded in combat. This organization was called “American Foundation for the Blind (AFB)”. The AFB helped men and women cope with becoming blind from combat. They took it upon themselves to help these wounded men and women understand and shape them into their sad but new way of life.
