Each year at least 500,000 children go blind. Imagine that you were one of them. Now imagine you also couldn’t hear. Helen Keller was both blind and deaf but she succeeded anyway. The fact that Helen Keller overcame obstacles, fought for many causes, and had a great legacy made her a good example of the human spirt.
Helen Keller overcame many obstacles in her lifetime. When she was very young, she was faced with her first obstacle. Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing at the age of nineteen months (Foner1). This affected her by making her develop differently than other kids.it was harder for her to interact with her parents and other people. Keller left has diminished but is still making an impact. Some people know who she was, many don’t. Fifty years ago, even twenty, nearly every ten-year-old knew who Helen Keller was. The Story of My Life, her youthful autobiography, was on the reading list of most schools. (Ozick 1). Today hardly anyone has heard of her. It is confusing that someone who made such an impact can be so unknown today. There are several books with the name Helen Adams Keller. The Story of My Life, The World I Live in, The Story of the Stone Wall (Williams 3-4). are just some of the pieces Helen wrote. Even with all the books she wrote, Helen has become not very well known. But her books are still important. Even before she died, she was having things named after her. When the AFB (American Foundation for the Blind). established a branch for the overseas blind, it was named Helen Keller International (Foner 2). Today HKL programs are preventing malnutrion and infectious. and diseases, restoring visons, and improving learning opportunities for those who are blind (Henry R. 3). Just one example that Ms. Keller made an impact that goes forward today. Helen Keller has a lasting legacy and probably has continued her work in
