A Brain Fever is a medical condition where a part of the brain becomes inflamed and causes symptoms that present as a simple fever. Despite its harmless presentation, Brain Fever is an extremely dangerous disease that could permanently alter somebody's life. On June 27th, 1880, Helen Keller was born a happy and healthy baby, until 1882 when Helen Keller suffered a “Brain Fever.” From this sickness, at the age of 19 months, Helen Keller became blind and deaf. Though her life was obviously tough, Helen Keller was able to persevere and she gained an education and a voice. She was able to speak out and stand up for people with similar disabilities. Helen Keller was the co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) defends and protects the rights of people in this country which are guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws of the USA. She wanted to create the ACLU because she wanted to speak out for others. Helen Keller was also able to give hundreds of speeches after joining the ACLU. Her speeches advocated for education and equality for people with disabilities. Lastly, Helen Keller also spoke out and gave lectures on behalf of the American Foundation for the Blind. She later raised 2 million dollars to support the American Foundation for the Blind. Helen Keller stated, "We live by each other and for each other. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." This quote clearly shows that Keller believes when people come together, the world can gain great improvements. It is easier to make changes and advance the world when people are able to speak out or stand up for others. As we know, Helen Keller suffered from a “Brain Fever” at the age of 19 months and she was left blind and deaf. From this she struggled her whole childhood, she threw tantrums and fits because she could not communicate with anyone else. “ However, she would also get frustrated. She realized that she was different and it was extremely difficult to let others know what she needed. She would sometimes throw tantrums, kicking and hitting other people in anger.” (Ducksters). From this quote, it is clear that Helen Keller felt very frustrated and misunderstood. She was never understood or communicated with. From this, we can see that Keller would have to have resilience and perseverance in order to gain knowledge and communication skills. This is important because a leader and great citizen need to understand the difficulty and importance of a problem.
