Makeup is a topic that there are many differing opinions on. People view it as a thing women hide behind because they are self-conscious and not happy with their natural beauty, but for many women makeup is used as a form of self-expression, empowerment, and art that is commonly misunderstood. When I wear makeup it is because I want to, and not because I feel obligated to, or to look “beautiful.” The amount of makeup you put on your face does not define your beauty. As I wipe off my makeup at night I feel happy and beautiful, just like myself during day just with all of my flaws exposed. She was born in Krakow, Poland, on December 25, 1870. She grew up in a strict home as the eldest daughter of eight, and had an average childhood with no traumatic experiences. The most important thing she learned as a child was her mother’s philosophy which she taught to her daughters. Her mother told them that with beauty and love they would influence the world (“Helena Rubinstein Biography”). Her mother gave Helena the encouragement that she needed to later on in life create a new industry. Without her mother, the beauty industry may have never been created because of the lack of exceptional experiences in Helena’s life. Later on, she met her husband Edward Titus, an American journalist, who was a clever man but he broke Helena’s heart. He was unfaithful and manipulative which made Helena feel unworthy of deserving love so she stayed with him no matter how many times he betrayed her. Eventually, she decided to embark on her business and ignore her failed love life. Rubinstein once said, “My heart has always been divided between the people I love and my ambition.” Her love life had many flaws so she transferred her energy to something more sustainable, her new up and coming business. When she first moved to Australia she set up a small shop in Melbourne. The market in Australia was fantastic because there was a lack of skin care items. When she returned to Europe she studied dermatology and opened a business in London in 1908 followed by Paris in 1912, and then expanded to the United States. After she had her salon in New York City, she added more salons spreading across the U.S. She decided to reside in the U.S. after this and to focus her energy there (“HR: American Business Woman.”). Rubinstein began the wholesale distribution of her products, which was the sector of her business that really took off. After a while, her business started gaining even more popularity. She had enough business to pay off her debt, hire a saleswoman, and have advertisements. She reached financial stability and success but never failed to stay humble and grateful. She continuously acknowledged her background and upbringing which kept her on track. She showed her integrity when in 1953 she established The Helena Rubinstein Foundation. This foundation gave scholarships to young women to support their education. The foundation is also known to be one of the major influential underwriters of Sesame Street. When the foundation was created Rubinstein said, “My fortune comes from women and should benefit them and their children to
