The book “Helping hyperactive kids- a sensory integration approach” by Lynn J. Horowitz and Cecile Rost was created to guide and provide insight to parents about their child’s behavior. “Helping hyperactive kids” provides useful techniques and activities and a breakdown of how parents and professionals could use a sensory integration approach through play to explain the development of a child. Furthermore, this book discusses sensory integration therapy and provides several questionnaires, checklists and true or false questions at the end of the book to determine if the child has sensory processing problems and behavior issues.

While reading this book, I was able to relate with the students I work with. Working as a paraprofessional, I have a student who is diagnosed with ADHD. My student is able to function in a general education class and perform at their grade level, but his behavior can be overwhelming at times. Even though he is very smart, I was unable to understand why he was incapable of behaving. He knows right from wrong, but still does not perform the correct behavior. He is extremely impulsive, hyperactive, inattentive and easily distracted. At times, I believe he behaves a certain way just for attention. But the more I continued to read, I started to look at him from a different perspective. Maybe he is unable to control his behavior at times. I plan to use some of the tips provided in the book to handle him a different way.
As for my second student, she has extreme difficulty tying her laces. At first, I thought she was lazy and her weight contributed to the effort of her bending over and tying her shoes. It seems as though her brain has difficulty sending messages to both her hands to work simultaneously. She becomes frustrated to the point where she starts to cry.
