Henry Every was a man of many titles such as “Long Ben”, “The Arch Pirate” and most importantly “The King Of Pirates”, he operated for a total of only two years before allowing himself to retire with the biggest bounty ever put on a crew. Every earned the title "Arch Pirate" due to pulling off one of the most daring and profitable raids in history when he captured the Grand Mughal ship, the "Ganj-i-Sawai," in 1695. who is said to have carried cargo worth 95 million in today’s dollars. That capture was the source of his and the crew's bounty. After word of his successful raid came out, the British government offered a £500 prize for each member of Every's pirate crew before the East India Company announced its own £1,000 per head. Every's incredible achievement is thought to have inspired many other marines who were sick of hardtack and lash to turn to piracy with the aim of replicating his once-in-a-lifetime capture. There are estimates he was born in 1653 in the vicinity of Plymouth, England. He began his maritime career on illegal slave ships. In 1694, he was a first mate on the Spanish ship "Charles II" a 46-gun ship with a license to attack French smugglers near Martinique. He lead the uprising and was chosen as the new commander, when he took control of Charles II, he declared his desire to become a pirate. It is believed he has said, “I am captain of this ship now, I am bound to Madagascar, with the design of making my own fortune, and that of all the brave fellows joined with me”. Every changed "Charles II" into the "Fancy" and set sail towards the Cape of Good Hope, where he rounded it and continued to Madagascar. (“Famous Pirate: Henry Every“.
