Men like Carnegie, Rockefeller and Morgan could be viewed as "Captains of Industry" and "Robber Barons." Some people may see these men as "captains of industry" because they helped move the nation forward with innovation. Andrew Carnegie who was a Scottish American industrialist ended up leading the huge expansion of the American steel industry. He purchased and constructed Carnegie Steel Company which was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He built a huge bridge across the Mississippi River which was the first time ever a bridge had been constructed out of steel.
I believe he is a captain of Industry. What made you categorize your choice as a Robber Baron or Captain of Industry? I believe Henry Ford is a Captain of Industry whose contribution was vital to this country place as a great industrial power. He uses his skills and social position to revolutionize the automobile industry, provide cars in a more affordable price and give his employers better and steady wages.
John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie were not captains of industry, they were robber barons. They treated their workers as machines and would do anything to get rich. Carnegie ran his company without any concerns pertaining to his workers. They worked long hours with very low wages and high risk of injury. Their work days were often 12 to 14 hours, for which they earned about ten dollars a week.

He should be classified and remembered as a Captain of Industry because of his industrial contributions such as the revolutionization of how people used transportation and by helping increase the economy through his 1908 Model T automobile. Henry Ford set great examples for other businessmen with his creation of the assembly line,making the production of industrialized goods faster and easier. Henry Ford used tactics to build his empire such as making the Model T affordable for everyone,good wages for his labor, and buying out other shareholders. With his great generosity and acts of philanthropy,he paid his employers more than average and also supported the people(affordable prices).
(“Weber, Austin”) My opinion about this is that Henry ford was an important guy during this time because of his inventions and things that he did like the 40 hour work week, was an important change and had a dramatic impact on the American culture reducing the hours of work from employees and the first t model car, had an impact on the American vehicles management because it became the first global car and it was affordable and better, and also the moving assembly line car production make this things easier for the workers to and have more time to be free than to be in the work, the minimum wage of 5 dollars per day was good because after a day of work you get paid not less than 5 dollars because it was the minimum and for that time five dollars was more money than it is now, Henry ford was major character during this period of time because he helped and he also illuminated the American culture with his wonderful inventions and
Throughout the late 1800s, many people grew tremendously in wealth. Most people started businesses or expanded railroads which required a lot of money. This start the idea of robber barons or captains of industry; while there were some people who would collect the money for themselves there were many people who gave back and did some great things for America. Therefore, industrialists of the 1860s-1900s were more rightly called Captains of Industry than robber barons. John D. Rockefeller, James Fisk, and Henry Flanger are some great examples of Captains of Industry.
His life growing up, gave him the experience of what the lower class people had to endure, he started out with nothing, but he took advantage of the opportunities he was presented with. Rockefeller, although he is portrayed as a robber baron, gave away more than half of his profit from the oil company, as well as donated one tenth of his income to charity. (The Trust and Monopoly) Despite being labeled falsely as a robber baron, he proved that he was a resourceful businessman that saw an opportunity and went for it, he used his resources and connections in the railroad company to earn him the millionaire status. With great power comes great responsibility, and these captains took it upon themselves, and realized that their responsibility, and duty to the nation, was to inform and educate the people on how to be successful as well.
Andrew Carnegie, one of the best businessmen in all of american history. Most consider Carnegie as a robber baron but I disagree. I say that Andrew Carnegie was in the place of a captain of industry. Carnegie was a captain of industry because he was the world's richest business man that came from a poor shoemaker house in scotland and once he sold away his massive company he turned to the people and became a philanthropists.

Rockefeller were men who came from nothing, but made fortunes off their innovations in the steel and oil industries. While their actions greatly benefitted the American economy, their monopolistic desires earned them a sinister reputation. These captains both had a disdain for competition and would do everything in their power to eliminate or absorb any opponents in order to gain more influence.

A captain of industry can be defined as ¨a business leader whose means of amassing a personal fortune contributed positively to the country in some way.” Andrew Carnegie was an ideal representation of a captain of industry, he was born poor, yet he rose the ranks and became a successful businessman who dedicated his fortune to good causes. Due to his success and innovation in the steel industry and his benevolent donations, Andrew Carnegie was a prosperous businessman who benefited lives across America. Andrew Carnegie furthered the steel industry and brought forward new innovations that advanced technology and market shares for generations. Not only did Carnegie develop technologies, he helped forge new business models.
