A pivotal part of The Secret History’s plot would be when Henry reveals to Richard about the bacchanal and explains what happened that led up to the murder of the farmer. The simple story is that Henry, Charles, Camilla, and Francis took drugs, rehearsed ancient rituals, and then in a drug induced frenzy killed a man. The plot is very different though, with first revealing that the group had killed someone. Richard asks, “You killed somebody...didn’t you?” In the story this is the end, but this only starts a major part of the plot. The suspense is it still built upon after this moment. Henry immediately compliments Richard on the deduction, normally people are not pleased to have someone find out that they killed someone. Richard continues to ask who had been killed, and this is where Henry says it was a minor ‘thing.’ Which in most movies/books reveals an uncompassionate person, but then that notion is downplayed when Richard confirms it was an accident. …show more content…

A boring everyday lecture is singled out that is when the Bacchanal is somewhat explained. At this point I was invested in how the group got to the point where they would kill a man, and Henry’s composure makes him more mysterious while reading. From there onward Henry goes into explaining that thousands of years ago people lost themselves. He explains that people always want to somehow completely lose themselves. This point I felt the most conflicted because I never wanted to lose myself completely as opposed to being completely free, but I still understand where this desire comes from.
