In the book, We Were Liars, by e. Lockhart, Cadence, the main character, shares memories of her father which helps the reader get a more clear idea of her character relationship with her father.
To demonstrate, the narrator stops the story to tell us a memory from her early perspective on her father. In the book it states,”...it was a sign of how much he loved both me and mummy…” (5). This shows the reader that earlier in her life, the father's relationship with Cadence was strong and loving. I think the reason this was put in the book was to show that there relationship was warm and kind. As well as to help develop and foreshadow the change in that may be coming. Also, because this happened so early on in the book, it supports the idea that this is foreshadowing her father's relationship with her being mentioned later on in the book, and it was something the author wanted the reader to pay attention to and know about from the beginning of the book. …show more content…

This quote is her reaction to her father leaving and what she feels watching her beloved father rolling away in the father's car. Although, Cadence was not literally shot in the chest, it is here to show the reader how strong her feelings are towards her father now and how their relationship changed. It is important to note that she says “ … shame of being unloved … “ almost directly after saying how she felt so loved by her father. For this reason, the reader gets the feeling that the change in relationship was abrupt and unexpected for the girl. This is the major change that happens between the father and daughter in the flashback and that is one reason why the story was interrupted for a memory
