The article written by David Serchina, on herbal supplements and athletes provided information on the herbs found in supplements used by athletes. Further information was provided by conducting studies (clinical) and chemically on proving how these herbs enhance the athlete’s health and performance is affected by these products. It also explained the ecological factors, production factors, consumer factors, planning factors and so on. Serchina stated that “dovetailing botany, chemistry, and medical disciplines from cell to physiology is critical to the advanced research on herbal supplements in athletic contexts”. So he conducted a multidisciplinary approach using the “factors of botanical, chemical, clinical, and commercial factors to better reflect the societal context of herbal supplements”. His conclusion raised deeper questions and no substantial answers to his original question in the end. His article lacked prudent information and only focused on performance levels of the supplement. I found a journal on athletic training, it contains various similar studies as mentioned in Serchina’s article. It discussed many of the same herbs and performance expectancies these products are supposed to provide athletes who consume them. The difference with this journal is it was easier to understand the studies conducted. It listed the risks and safety issues involved with said supplements. There were several studies and cases of severe medical issues and deaths also related to herbal substances but also unanswered questions as to how these products enhance athletic performance. It also provided information that “supplements should contain substances that are obtained through food”. This includes “carbohydrates, amino acids, protein, minerals, and nutrients. Athlete’s need to get adequate energy”. This can be done without the use of products we see on the market promoting healthier, stronger body. This journal also had several links to explore more
