Historical Puritans The puritans created the Puritans religion were created to cleanse the corrupt and sinful practices in England and enforce public morality. The puritans believed that churches specifically Roman Catholic were full of hierarchies and so the Puritans escaped England and to gain religious freedom “They [puritans] contended that The Church of England had become a product of political struggles and man-made doctrines. The Puritans were one branch of dissenters who decided that the Church of England was beyond reform”(Kiser). The Puritans headed for america and created a “pure” religion and lifestyle. They strictly followed the bible and were calvinist.
Behind a False Security After losing her house to a fire, Anne Bradstreet represented her thoughts and feelings in the form of an iambic poem titled “Verses upon the Burning of our House”. It openly presents an internal conflict that Bradstreet has between her religion and her cherish for material possessions. She is committed to God and to her beliefs, which is utterly exhibit as her first instinct was to pray to God and ask for support and guidance when she feared for her life. Although her sentiment towards God is genuine, this poem displays what I can only describe as a clear camouflage of her real pain and perceptions during that tragic moment in which her house and everything she owned slowly burned down in front of her.

The Puritans were a group of people that were discontented with the church in England. The moved from England because it was expected to have religious, moral and social reforms. They lived by the bible because they believed that the Bible was the very true law of God. Although they rejected the church's authority. They were seeking to purify of a not only church but also their everyday lives.
Puritans thought that the Devil was about as real as God is. It is said that they believed Satan would select the weakest out of them all, which was mostly women, children, the insane and punish them. The ones that followed Satan were considered witches. Anne Bradstreet through several of her poems does not show true Puritan beliefs. In “Verses Upon the Burning of our House”, Bradstreet is caught in the internal conflict between her faith and accepting the loss of her earthly possessions. She used personification to state that her heart “cried” to God not to leave her helpless but it delivers the idea that she only prays to him when she is in need (8). All the luxuries that Puritans have are given by God’s grace and belong to him. Anne is a materialistic person because she says, “When by the ruins oft I past, my sorrowing eyes aside did cast, and here and there the places spy, where oft I sate and long did lie” (21), thus she is still sorrowing about losing her things even though she knows
The poem “Verses Upon the Burning of our Houses” describes a person’s thoughts as their house burns down. The narrator realized through the experience that their earthly possessions are not nearly as important as God and what he has in store for them in heaven. During the beginning the narrator was woken up from people screaming, “fire.” They then asked God to help them through what was happening and to not leave them helpless. As the narrator went outside, they saw the house in flames.
To add, Puritans were fundamentalists; they believed that every word in the Bible was the true word of God. For example, they hung witches because they believed that was what God had wanted. Exodus 22:18, King James’s version of the Bible, the scripture Puritans read and lived by, includes the quote, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The quote was interpreted literally by the Puritans leading them to want to hang all alleged witches. Moreover, Puritans also strongly believed in Satan and believed that the devil could unwillingly enter the body of a weak-willed person leading them to become a witch.
After Calvinism was created Christianity divided into two. The Puritan lifestyle was greatly influenced by the Christian beliefs and the church. During the 17th century, the church was the main cornerstone of the society of the Puritans. The people were required to have a moral conduct that was acceptable and also was required to follow the moral code that was strict. They believed in the wrath of God, and they would do anything possible to avoid it.

The Puritans based their lives on the covenants they made when they came to New England. The covenant was agreeing to base their life around God or face the consequences. When the Puritans broke the covenants they were punished by public humiliation, exile from the community, and even death ("Puritans (1600-1754)."). The Puritans were hellbent on keeping sin out of the colonies because many people watched their loved ones die on the journey to New England. They also suffered through a harsh winter and battled starvation so they took it upon themselves to do anything to “purify” the colonies ("Puritans (1600-1754).").
In the year 1630, a religious group called the Puritans traveled to America from Europe. Though the beliefs of the Puritans were very similar to those of the Roman Catholics, they were persecuted while in Europe for not following the common religion. Like most people of different faiths, they wanted the opportunity to worship freely. The Puritans believed that every human, from the time they were born, was predestined to go either to Heaven or to Hell.

A Puritan is someone who wants to make the church more simple and purify it. The Puritans opposed the Church of England from becoming too similar to the Roman Catholic Church. However, the Puritans intended to retain all worship and ceremonial practices grounded in the Scriptures. Throughout the early 1600s, the Puritans retained firm beliefs in the existence of the devil as well as the Bible. Following the Reformation, the Bible began to provide solace and stability to the Puritans.
Against the Odds Puritan New England, life was religious, education and morale’s. Thinking of our world today and the world that dated back to 1670 it was quite different. Puritans lived longer, and were expected to teach religion to their children. As well as placing authority and discipline in the care of the father.
