As we consider this is a Hermeneutics class we can start by defining our terms. I have heard this terminology around the Brown Trail School of Preaching quite often. The word Hermeneutics is the art of interpreting the scriptures. The word is derived from Hermes the interpreter of Jupiter, the branch of theology that deals with the principles of Biblical Exegesis. This research we will find that the subject that is being discussed parables and the interpretation of them fall right in line with the class Hermeneutics. Jesus employed a method of teaching that dates back to the Old Testament. He told parables that dealt with personalities and situations common to those listening. Bible would actually agree that he came to seek and save that which was lost Luke 19:10. Jesus task was that of urgency, so his message was that of urgency. Rather than speaking and teaching in the manner of that of the Jewish scribes, Jesus taught with authority Mathew 7:29. By doing so, he captured the attention of the audience. We as Bible students today and most being not Bible student can understand a parable more so than we can grab on to a complicated part of a Bible text. As we examine these great Bible Parables, I have taught myself to look at the context when we examine each of them. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son Jesus is addressing those who had a problem with him eating with sinners and Publicans. I must admit this is one of my favorite parables. This is another that self explains. We save the best for last for last. The Parable of the rich man and the poor man, some know it as the rich man and Lazarus. This is probably one of the more controversial is a parable or is it not? There have been many of a great debate about this particular parable. According to Dungan, he says flat out it is not. According to the World Video Bible School, this account is not viewed as a parable due to the names mentioned in this account. Consequently, if we examine the previous parables, this account is the only one that has names associated with it. Dungan states, “It was not stated, nor even hinted, as being any purpose in giving the parable." There is neither Statement before or afterwards that would lead to such a conclusion.” We get back to the parable itself we see the Pharisees considered wealth to be a proof of one’s righteousness.
