In modern day, a hero is typically a person who is revered and appreciated for making or attempting to make a difference in the world. Qualities a hero may have are: integrity, leadership, strength, confidence, courage, and humility. These qualities have allowed and equipped men and women to fight for freedom, human rights, equality, and education. Although Malcolm X and Beowulf existed centuries apart and faced different adversities, they both share the heroic traits of courage and leadership. The epic hero Beowulf and the modern day hero Malcolm X both share the heroic characteristic of courage.
When the word hero is spoken, many may immediately think of a character like Superman. Superman can fly and has extreme strength, allowing him to help his city. What truly makes Superman a hero is how he puts these skills to use with his outstanding personality qualities. Odysseus, from the Odyssey, also has overlapping traits of a hero. He is not gifted with supernatural capabilities but still put in an effort to help his men and community.
• I’ve learned in this unit, three universal characteristics of a hero. One characteristic is some type of special powers not necessarily things like super strength or Flying but hospitality and friendliness or the will to help others could be considered special powers or something even greater to save the day. A hero is anyone who makes the right decision to sacrifice for a person in need. For example, without heroes like firemen, wildfires and house fires would spread across the nation, costing lives and loss of worldly possessions. Firemen stand strong, risk themselves, and protect all for the well-being, safety of others, and personal property. In addition,
Everyone is a hero at some point in there life. A hero is kind and helps others with their actions and words. Pony, Dallas, and Johnny are heroes in the book The Outsiders. Also, he returns to his ordinary world when he is not fighting crime and protecting his city: Starling City. In conclusion, Oliver Queen is considered hero, because he has courageous and special abilities. He fits within the traditional qualities of hero, because he is focused, determined, and loyal. Although the word “hero” has transcended time, the definition has not. When modern-day humans go into reading about Greek heroes, expecting them to resemble our current ones, they are unpleasantly surprised to find selfish people who sometimes indiscriminately murder in the name of honor. In comparison, we value the firefighter that puts their life on the line to save others, the person standing up to the bully with pacifism rather than fists, and those that learn to forgive and forget instead of spending their entire lives seeking revenge on those that have wronged them. Thus, Achilles would not be considered a modern-day hero like he was in ancient Greece, because whilst they valued glory, brutal strength, and revenge, today we value selflessness,
There are many characteristics a hero must possess. A hero may be thought of as an individual who has super-power abilities and wears an iconic cape (symbolic cape.) On the contrary, a hero may be thought of a sneaky and sleek vigilante. However, oftentimes sensationalizing heroes isn't necessary because they take the form of everyday people among us. Even though Jonas from “The Giver” by Lois Lowry is the perfect example of a regular person, he is a hero as he demonstrates traits of bravery, selflessness, and integrity.
However, heroism can take place in our everyday lives by simple brave actions. A hero has many noble qualities such as courage, humility, patience, being selfless and caring. They will put other people before themselves and make sure others are content. Heros are also intelligent and like to think ahead to plan on a good result.

Modern heroes are more selfless. By selfless I mean they put others in front of themselves to protect them from being harmed both mentally, and physically. Overall, both types of heros are extremely brave and are both special in their own
