Smith was a hero since the terms of the heroism definition says something. He knew that what was happening to humanity wasn’t right. He desired to alter that but he knew he couldn’t do it alone. He noticed O’Brien was on his side. He thought he would be able to help him, but even if he did they both knew that they would be caught by the Big Brother in the end.
