The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is the first true American novel which portrais the views of the puritans, somewhat critizing them, and of course the story of the main character and development. Hester, the main character of the story had commited a terrible crime; adultery. In the times the books takes place, adultery is seen as one of the worst crimes a woman or man can commit in a puritan society. Hester is introduced as a very beautiful woman which had commited this crime but the mistery was finding out who the man was. The whole book is based on the author, basically telling us this story of Hester and how she deals with her situation, everyone knowing of her sin etc. and also, the ways he critizises puritans. From the beginning of the story, basically almost to the end, we are never really told who the man was but, Hawthorne gives us hints and clues that eventually let us know who that man is. …show more content…

The other important character in the book are: Chillingsworth- Hester’s real husband who is a doctor and whose real identity remains concealed to everyone; Dimmesdale- preacher who is portraid in the first parts of the novel as the “good preacher” who wanted to help Hester; Pear- Hester’s daughter, and often showed as the representation of her sin. These are the character you need to know for this discussion. What happens in the book when Chillingsworth finds out about Hester being pregnat is as you would imagine. He tries to be a gentleman with Hester and tries to help her in some ways. He is also not very mad at Hester, much more, trying to find out who the man guilty of the crime was as well.
