"During the "Middle Ages", from 476 to about 1100, European civilization slipped into semi-barbarism". It was a very hard and bad time, but a lot of historians debate about if Europe was in a "dark age" or not. The evidence states that Europe was a dark age. There was a lot of evidence that states that Europe was not in a dark age.
The Middle Ages were a time where kings and nobles owned the land and serfs worked with little pay. Serfs were like slaves that worked on a farm (Doc. 1). They got one day to farm for themselves and the other six they were working for their king or noble (OI). Nobles and kings had knights called vassals (OI). Vassals were knights who protected and served kings and nobles in exchange for land (OI).
In the Middle Ages, the power of people impacted the society, because of the Feudal System. In other words, the rankings of people. There were four groups. The Kings and Queens were at the top, then the nobles, the knights, and last peasants and serfs(Doc. 1). Serfs and peasants had very little land given and they even had to provide food that they farmed for the knights and nobles.
As merchants travelled from city to city in Europe and in the Middle East, they had to change money from one currency to another. Manorialism was a huge aspect of economic in Europe. It is the name for the organization of the economy in the Middle Ages. The economy relied mainly on agriculture. Manorialism describes how land was distributed and who profited from the land.
In the 1300's, an Italian scholar named Petrach used the term "dark ages" to describe the medieval period (Movie Talk: The Dark Ages). Petrach applied the "dark" and "light" terms to learning. Petrach believed that the Romans and Ancient Greeks were in the "light" of learning. The following period, the middle ages, was in the "dark''. Ever since he used the term, historians have been debating whether the time period between the 500's and the 1500's were really a "dark age.
By the year 1000 through the year 1300, the climate changed to a much warmer than usual weather. During this age, the productivity of food and other materials were at their highest. However the years after 1300 saw a cold unlike any before, it was called the little ice age. The little ice age lasted from 1300 to 1450, but in between that time frame, the crops and livestock were dying at an unbelievable rate, it left Europe in complete disarray. The prices of food increased to astronomical prices, with fewer food intake, it left people weakened and more susceptible to disease.
The Middle Ages was the time period after the fall of the Roman Empire around 500 CE to the 1350’s. During this time the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope held the most power throughout Europe, the priests often lived in a closed area inside the walls of the monasteries. “Schools were few. Illiteracy was widespread” (Background essay) because of this average person of this time was illiterate .and more than 85 percent of the population were farmers and peasants called serfs and they worked in an estate for the owner called the lord.
The introduction of the book is packed with general knowledge about religions of the world people should know. The introduction begins with Prothero shedding light on the fact that although there are many differences in the world, like democracy and monarchy but, all religions are one. According to Prothero, all religions share the sweet harmony of peace, love, and understanding. (Prothero 2010, p. 2) There is an analogy made that religions are different paths up the same mountain, which means that they may have different bases, but they have the same end goal. Prothero continues on acknowledging that people today try so hard to get along with each other there is an automatic religious tolerance that happens, which seems like a good thing but having tolerance is admitting that there is a difference.
The fall of the social structure in medieval period marked the downfall of the Middle Ages. The social structure of the Middle Ages was based on a system called Feudalism. A disease known as the Bubonic Plague and peasant revolt eventually led to the fall of the Feudalism. Bubonic Plague was also called the Black Death. It first began in Asia then spread to Europe.
The History Channel 's television series, Vikings, combines many elements of realism and fantasy. In Helen Young 's Re-making The Real Middle Ages, she points out how the media commercializes the whole idea of vikings, perhaps, in order to sell to more audiences by adding historically inaccurate elements such as supernatural aspects and unrealistic repeated triumph of the main action hero. Some realistic elements present in the show are the use of native language, brutal violence. It was also realistic how vikings raided, killed, stole treasure, and burned down the remainder of the town bringing back a few townspeople to sell as slaves. Some fantasized elements on the other hand happened in the beginning where a mysterious being in a black
But in the late Middle Ages, there were many wars which killed large number of people. At this time, the people of Europe were horribly facing the effects of the Black Death, which was the worst pandemics in human history. The Catholic church began to have bad reputation as the priests did not help the people during the Black Death and angered people because of their wealth. After the High Middle Ages, there were many social and economic reasons that led to the decline of the Catholic Church in Western Europe. There were many social changes that had taken place in Europe that caused the Catholic Church to lose power and popularity.

The Middle Ages have always been an interesting topic in the discussion of art. Mostly within the Renaissance era and quite some time beyond it, the Middle Ages were often thought as “The Dark Ages,” a time of a lower class of civilization and lower quality of art and architecture. Of course later historians began to take the time period more seriously and found the art of the Middle Ages to be an interesting and fascinating piece of culture in both its art and architectural works. Of the many types of art that appeared throughout the Middle Ages, one that may be the most commonly associated with the times is the art known as Byzantine.
Medieval Europe changed significantly during the tenth and eleventh centuries. The economy underwent a transformation through specialized jobs, job responsibilities, technology, and the development of towns and cities. People lived in small villages until the growth of towns and cities redefined the class structure. New agricultural practices increased the food supply as well as technological changes expanding agriculture. These changes created a more intelligent social class of people.
