In agree with authors’ position on heterosexism in that it is the discrimination of the individual who has a different view about who they are relating to sexuality. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersexed (LGBTQI) community is often oppressed by society because society often think they are abnormal. Heterosexism is a prejudice that causes distress among the LGBTQI population. Often, heterosexual seems to have more opportunities than LGBTQI people. The counselor must recognize that disadvantages are distressing to the LGBTQI community. “Heterosexual privilege includes the right to marry, access the information of loved ones in the event of a medical emergency, legal and financial rights to property in the event of the death of a spouse, and adoptive and child rights.” (Hays & Erford, 2014, p. 134). …show more content…

The author states that “related terms many people often confuse with heterosexism is homophobia. Homophobia is defined as fear and hatred of LGBTQI people.” Page134. Hate crimes are prevalent towards the LGBTQI community from the heterosexist. Because of the increase in hate crimes, including murder, because of sexual orientation or gender identity, federal laws been passed to help protect those individuals. Homonegativity or homoprejudice are terms recommended by advocates for social justice in the LGBTQT community.
