Hidden Figures is a nonfiction novel authored by Margot Lee Shetterly focused on three women who had a very large, but unknown influence in getting the United States into space to win the Space Race and Cold War in the mid-1900s. Shetterly focuses on the lives of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson, who worked in Hampton, Virginia in NASA, with various roles requiring high level education. Until I read this book, I had no idea that anyone of Black race could have such occupations while segregation was still strong. Although race relations in the United States between whites and African Americans have significantly improved since the abolishment of Jim Crow laws, director Spike Lee’s socially conscious satire, Bamboozled shows that discrimination has only evolved. Released in 2000, the film sought to edify the African American population about the racist and stereotypical treatments blacks endured during the Jim Crow era when they were used to entertain the white masses. Moreover, it also shows how that culture is still propagated today, with African American film makers just as guilty. From the time the first African set foot in the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, race relations have always been whites’ superiority over blacks.
Through all the obstacles life gave Mary Jackson, she still stood out and achieved things that were only a fantasy for some colored women at the time. In the 1940’s Virginia was a segregated place, Black people were stereotyped, mistreated, and treated as if they were a whole different species of people, and to be a woman was even harder. Until recently women were still treated as if they were a rank under men and had very little expectation from the people around them. When WWII took place and all the men were off at war, women were needed to take the place of the men who had left in jobs no one would have imagined a woman could do. Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (LMAL) started recruiting women to take jobs as mathematicians.
Hidden Figures is a film that tells the story of three African American women who played essential roles at NASA during the 1960s. Katherine, the main character, is a scientist at NASA working to do the math required to launch a rocket into space. In particular, Mr. Poe uses onomatopoeia and alliteration to convey his message to his readers. “The Bells” is a poem that describes the sounds of four different kinds of bells. Having class is important because you could come from nothing and become something in a matter of time. For instance, Dorothy strived so hard to attain the position of supervisor since she was already doing the work of a supervisor but wasn’t getting the same amount of a supervisor because she was an African American. Later in the film, Dorothy subsequently got what she asked. She received the position as a supervisor and got the same pay as a supervisor. In conclusion, at the time when the film Hidden Figures was filmed it had elements of racism, sexism, and class (economic standards) which was a prime example of intersectionality and how the women were treated on a daily basis.
Individuality is unaccepted and isolated from our society that embraces conformed values. The Copy Shop and L’homme sans tete are examples of short films that reflect this ironic problem of society where individuals are not identified with their individual morals, but conformed morals enforced by society. The 2001 short film, Copy Shop by Virgil Widrich conveys the idea of conformity. This is done foremost through the metaphor of 'copies' that fill up the film's world that represent conformity, where the composer satirises our society which is filled up by 'copies' of individuals sharing conformed ideals.
Get Out (2017) is a horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. The film is about a black male named Chris, performed by Daniel Kaluuya, who is going out of town with his girlfriend Rose, performed by Allison Williams. The purpose of this trip is to meet her parents for the first time at their estate located deep into the woods. Little does Chris know Rose’s parents do not really care to meet him but are more interested in auctioning off his body. Chris figures this out towards the end of the film and he barley figures out a way to escape.
Hidden Figures is an inordinate movie that gives us the lesson that everybody has the potential to do great things if they work hard towards those things. In this movie, an exceptional girl named Katherine is given the chance to go to an extraordinary school so that she can get the education that she needs to fulfill her dream and become an engineer at NASA. The movie showcases the struggles, hard-work, and discrimination that she has to go through while working at NASA. Although some examples of racism are more easily noticeable than others in the movie, all of them show that many Americans did not particularly approve of African-Americans in the mid-1900s.
In the film Extreme Measures someone can find ideas of Secular Ethics throughout the film involving Utilitarianism and its basic tenets along with Kantian analysis. The basic tenets of Utilitarianism include the principle of utility, Hedonism, and the viewpoint of a disinterested and benevolent spectator. While the tenets of Kantian Ethics, which include good will, the formula of universal law, the formula of the end itself, and the categorical imperative. These basic ideas setup arguments for and against the Utilitarian ideas set up by doctor Myrick. In the film doctor Myrick makes the claim that it is worth the deaths of unwilling subjects in order to help/save the lives of millions.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
