Throughout “Stories We Tell” there are many questions and uncertainties pertaining the truth behind Sarah Polley’s biological father, and the affairs that her mother Diane may have been involved in. As we get deeper in the story we found out there have been multiple accusations of Diane being with other guys during her unfaithful marriage with Michael. A Raisin in the Sun PBA Unit 2 Cinematography and filmmaking are art forms completely open to interpretation in many ways such lighting, the camera as angles, tone, expressions, etc. By using cinematic techniques a filmmaker can make a film communicate to the viewer on different levels including emotional and social. Play writes include some stage direction and instruction regarding the visual aspect of the story. In this sense, the filmmaker has the strong basis for adapting a play to the big screen. “A Raisin in the Sun” is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959.
Written and directed by Victoria Mahoney, Yelling to the Sky is the story of seventeen-year-old Sweetness O’Hara (Zoë Kravitz), surrounded by a deteriorating family and a challenging and convoluted crime-infested neighbourhood. Sweetness is the daughter of a biracial couple; a manic-depressive, ferocious, alcoholic, white father and a discreet, miserable, black mother and is subjected to racism both from the black and white sides as well as constant bullying at school. Throughout this ordeal, her older sister is always there to protect her. However, at one point, when her older sister leaves the house to go give birth, Sweetness converts from the bully’s victim to being the bully herself. Bigger, Stronger, Faster is a documentary directed by Christopher Bell that presents the widespread use of steroids in sports as a sign of winning at whatever cost it takes to be better. The Bell brothers have been drawn into perceiving that performance enhancing drugs is the way to realizing the American Dream. This documentary demonstrates various interviews with coaches, politicians, doctors, and bodybuilders. Bigger, Stronger, Faster informs people the use of steroids and issues of taking steroids.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. He wrote this because he wanted to attempt to capture a connection between his experiences and the Salem witch trials of 1692. He wanted to spread his message of the Communist “witch- hunts” during the 1950s. Joseph McCarthy imprisoned anyone that was a suspect of being a communist. Miller was accused of being a communist because he was a jewish man, with a political advocate against the inequalities of race in America.
The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
Sound is being used to create or sense the mood for the audience. For example, when Kim’s father is outside, diegetic sound is used so the characters hear the baseball game playing in the background which makes the situation exciting for the audience. Edward finishes trimming a bush (the dinosaur) and everyone is amazed. This can appear to create a dramatic and happy effect for the audience. The sound then crescendos to make it seem as if Edward is being cheered on by the crowd.
One of the best usage of sound design as a tool of storytelling has to be in the first sequence of The Exorcist. As a horror movie, which as a genre builds itself on the vicarious experience it provides, uses more complex patterns of sound design templates to enhance the adventure of watching the movie. Throughout the first scene, Ken Nagle lays what the audience will be the experiencing through the duration of the movie with sound design; the duel between good and evil. The Exorcist’s first sequence, the audience can hear the digging sound of the workers, which resembles the heart pounding.
In 2015, HBO aired a six-part, true crime documentary series titled, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. Writer and director, Andrew Jarecki, examined the details of three crimes associated with Durst, including the disappearance of Durst’s first wife Kathy, the murder of his dear friend, Susan, and the murder and dismemberment of his neighbor, Morris Black. While the mini-series was met with acclaim, many – including myself – criticize The Jinx for its storytelling approach. The series seemingly blurs the lines of storytelling – for entertainment purposes – and journalism; raising many questions regarding ethics.
