“Between 1999 and 2004, student enrollment in music education declined by 47%.” Seeing how this is a large issue we are being faced with in California, it is our job to fight back and join together to address our issues. My own experience in the arts has shown me that creativity assists in making us stand out as an individual. Individually is a key role in the workfield as well as in having a successful life. Without arts, I would have never known my love for expressing myself in ways I wouldn’t have ever known without arts in my educational career.
The first time I got introduced to music would be in my school band in my 5th grade year, I played the clarinet and i liked it for the most part and I wasn't to bad with it, but something was wrong I just didn't feel like it was mine thing so i tried something else I started to use a guitar when i got to the 7th grade and I went to take classes in my band class and to be totally honest I like the guitar better the the clarinet and after a year of playing I stopped to focus on school. In all of my Highschool career, I have developed numerous skills whether it be from being head of groups, able to speak in big crowds, and making sure that everyone understood their positions. Starting eighth grade, I had begun my journey by being a part of the Junior National Honor Society and becoming our classes representative, or as others say “Junior High valedictorian”. At this point in my life, I was able to realize that I demonstrated all the characteristics that a leader needed, and I was viewed to students and teachers as a mentor. After I had been promoted to High School, I was ambitious and challenged myself to be a part of Louder Than A Bomb poetry group. Freshman year was the Louder Than A Bombs first year at our High School which caused that year to be the group's building block.
I began attending a residential high school for the arts as a junior. Coming from a school where arts were disregarded, attending my new school was special to me, and has changed my life in a multitude of ways. I spent the following summer attending Boston University's Tanglewood Institute's Trombone Workshop. There, I met musicians who bonded over the desire for success, which motivated me to intensify my musical abilities. After BUTI, my educational desires changed even more.
It was as simple as that. A love for harmony, both in music and in life washed over me. It was this love that guided me through my freshman year of high school. My artistic side grew, expanding past simply the choral arts. As the spring approached, excitement grew in the arts department.
Throughout my high school career, there is only one major thing that has affected my entire life, including my educational performance and that is marching band. The marching band at my high school is one of the most well respected programs in my district. In eighth grade, I decided to audition for color guard. And when I made the team, I became apart of the marching band. That year, my entire life changed.
I began listening to a variety of music and explored different interests in school and my community. I decided to enroll in the most meaningful and enjoyable class of my entire high school career: The History of Rock and Roll. This is where I was first introduced to countless artists and genres, from the roots of the Mississippi Delta Blues, all the way to Liverpool to meet my most favorite band, The Beatles. Learning a simple blues scale lead to the discovery of my passion for playing various kinds of music, but it has also given me a tremendous sense of personal and professional accomplishment.
Born with the Right Fundamentals In my life, I have noticed that the students seem to fall into two groups: music kids and the athletes. When we consider these groups, we tend to develop a “High School Musical Effect”, in which we think that people can only be what their certain group allows them to be. Born a music geek, I fell into the first group. Even though I tried sports for a decent amount of my middle school career, I fell in love with band, choir, and drama instead.
If I could continue anything i did in high school I would join the michigan marching band. Marching band in high school has been a way for me to meet new people. One of my favorite marching bands for me too watch has always been the Michigan band I would love too take part in it. One of my requirements for school has been a marching band or a pep band and a large marching band like Michigan's would be very preferable. Joining band had an immense and almost immediate impact on my life. Before being in band I had never had a talent that I felt completely confident in. I enjoyed practicing and spent many hours trying to improve my musical ability. In
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” (Plato). If my childhood was filled with anything: it was imagination. From my earliest memories of my cousin, and I putting on a sold out concert on my papaw’s front porch; to putting my baby dolls to sleep with lullabies. Music has always been a big part of my life: it was the one thing I could always count on, no matter where I went; and that still stands true today.
Many times we would be in the car singing and dancing to the tunes she would blast through the speakers. It was not until my middle school days when I began to grow an appreciation for more than just pop, country, and Disney music. It was my first day of 6th grade and I walked into my choir class. I remember my teacher, Mrs. Grady, standing by the door welcoming all of us students by singing. In that classroom, there was an abundance of happiness and joy and because of that I began to associate those feelings with music.
At a young age, I constantly wanted to express myself through music. I always found a way to incorporate music into my daily life, whether it be by blasting my favorite music, creating my own funky songs, or even having the opportunity to participate in my elementary school choir. My love for music actually took flight after I had decided to join my elementary school choir, however, in my opinion, it is not the most transformative moment in my life. After elementary
Even with my moods, whether it is sad or mad, music will help me get through it. It has absolutely been an enormous part of my life and who I am. Thus, this is to say that I have musical talent. I am in a high school marching band, where I play any piano-like instrument. My viewpoint with music has come to a simple conclusion, without it, I would not know who I am or what to do with my life.
