Introduction In our society today, there is suffering to the left, right, up, and down. There is suffering as we go to school every morning and go to sleep every night. With all of this suffering, who do we go to, and who do we blame? Many may look to political theologians such as Moltmann and Soelle who believe in the symbol of the cross and the suffering God. Though, these two theologians look to the same symbol but think different of its meaning. Then, others who may look for more reason may believe in the theologian that goes by the name of Metz. Metz shares, “… by keeping alive their story against the inclination of tyrants to bury it, it robs the master of their victory” (Johnson 66). Therefore, we have to remember the people lost in the shooting, and that is what Parkland, Florida is doing. The community is continuously coming together to remember the lives taken by Nikolas Cruz. For example, there is a memorial set up at the school where friends and family are able to visit and remember. Furthermore, the Stoneman hockey team won the championship and decided to leave their metals at the memorial for the victims. By remembering, it will incline people to never let an event, as tragic as a shooting, happen again. Lamenting is mourning the memory of the people who suffered. Plus, it is connected with the term Metz coined, dangerous memory. This causes people to ask God why. Hence, life is not fair and people turn to God asking questions. Metz explains, “Over and over he presses his question why, insisting that God should answer, all the while clinging to the hope that he would be redeemed” (Johnson 67). This relates to the school shooting because he community as a whole wants to know why this happened to them. Parkland, Florida is nonstop asking God why. Why did the shooter go to the school and kill their students and their teachers? Metz believes it is okay for people to feel angry towards a situation like this. Being passionate about a situation will cause the community to come together and never let a shooting happen again. Therefore, the community can flourish because they will remember the happy times with the lost victim. Then, they will engage in more community event such as the memorial made for the lost. After, they will build new and powerful relationships within the community. Plus, they will find meaning by creating ways to prevent a shooting from happening again.
