INTRODUCTION:

I. When I was living in Oregon, people would frequently ask me why I wear

hijab.

II. Muslims have to communicate and explain to non Muslims the meaning of

hijab

III. Although lately hijab is discussed more among people in the United States

and the West, non Muslims still have a misconception why women wear

hijab.

IV. Muslims needs to take advantage of the social media to educate others that

wearing hijab is a women choice and not a requirement.

(Transition: Let us see what does hijab means and its different types.)

BODY

I. In addition to Muslim women, Christian and Jewish women in some traditions wear it

as a cultural practice or commitment to modesty.

Hijab is a square scarf that covers the head and neck, but leaves the face clear.

This is the most commonly worn form of hijab by women in the West.

iii. Chador is a long cloak that covers a woman's entire body. It wraps around the

head and drapes to the woman's feet.

iv. The niqab covers the face, the mouth and nose, but leaves the eyes clear.

iiv. Hijab is not to restrict women and strip them their freedom, but to protect them

and guide their behavior when they do things that Muslims should not do.

I. Although Muslims have been in the United States for more than 100 years, women

in hijab have been wrongly and negatively in some communities.

i. Since 9/11, the media has been featuring the hijab as a symbol of terrorism or

violence. As people lean toward getting most of their information from these

resources, they will develop a negative picture about Islam in general and women

in hijab in particular. For instance, when news feature a women wearing Muslim

attire such as hijab while reporting stories related to terrorism.

iii. Whether it is fear or hate, the number of violent incidents again Muslims has

increased in the United States. According to the Huffington Post, there have

been almost daily reports of violence, harassment, intimidation, and bigotry

against Muslims in the United States. Some women wearing hijab were harassed

at a restaurant in Texas, others were threatened in California and some were

allegedly attacked in Florida.

iv. Studies have found the majority of Americans do not have a grasp on the

teachings of Islam. They depend mostly on what the media puts out. It has been

shown that the strongest reason for negative attitudes against Muslims is

"perceived symbolical and realistic threat." This types of attitudes is attracting

more viewers and making headline stories.

iiv. In Australia, a radio presenter triggered both debate and outrage when he called

for the face veil to be banned from banks and post offices.
