Hinduism and Buddhism are two very popular religions. While Hindu and Buddhist traditions may be similar in both of their backgrounds, the role of women in Hinduism and Buddhism are extremely different. Gendered Order is reinforced by numerous texts, social norms, and traditions that outline particular roles of men and women in Hinduism. Gendered Order shows how women and men are inferior to one another within the cultural and religious norms, especially in regards to following their end goal in Hinduism which is moksha and samsara, which means liberation from the continuous circle of life, death, and rebirth. It advocates that a woman’s main duty is to help her husband in completing mandatory duties and allow him to continue his family tradition. The woman’s main duty is to take care of her husband, give birth, and take care of the rest of the family. The Vedas means knowledge. It comes from Sanskrit and has 3 types of religious texts. The texts include; Shruti, Rig Veda, and Purusha-Sukta. Shruti means that which is heard. The oldest of the Vedas, Rig Veda, is the creation of the universe. “In the Rig Veda, the female is explicitly an immoral, while her husband is moral (one of those from whom ‘they’ hid her)” (270, Doniger). Lastly, Purusha-Sukta is said that the universe is an outcome of Purusha. Purusha means man. It is said that three quarters of his body ascends upward while a fourth of his body stays on earth. The part of his body that stays on earth is past around to all living things. This being said, a man originated the entire universe, without any help from women. This then goes back to the Laws of Manu stating that the most important part of reproductive development is men. “The husband enters the wife, becomes an embryo, and is born here on earth. That is why a wife is called a wife (jaya), because he is born (jayate) again in her. The wife brings forth a son who is just like the man she makes love with; that is why he should guard his wife zealously, in order to keep his progeny clean” (Bose).
