There have been many Queens of the Amazons. One of the most well known Queen of the Amazons was Hippolyta. Some people may only know her connection to Theseus from Shakespeare's play A Midsummer’s Dream. Others may know her from Heracles ninth labor or from her part in DC Comics. Here is some background so you can be a little better informed about this famous warrior queen. Hippolyta's parents were Ares, God of War, and Otrera, the mother of the Amazonian Nation and three future queens besides Hippolyta (Amazons). The most recognised symbol of Hippolyta is her girdle or sword belt. It was given to her by her father Ares. He gave it to her in order to symbolise her right to reign over the Amazons. It is generally said that he acted on his own but some say Hercules was with him. The Amazons weren’t expecting any treachery from him, so Hippolyta boarded his ship to greet him. Once she was aboard he set sail for Athens, claiming Hippolyta as his bride. This sparked a war between the Amazons and the Athenian peoples. Hippolyta bor Theseus a son, however he later cast her off in favor of another woman. She then returned to Themiskyra. Some stories claim Hippolyta was dead before the two were wed. Others claim she and her Amazons stormed their wedding vowing to kill anyone involved with the festivities. However there is no way to know for sure (Hippolyta). Hippolyta was not the only Amazon Queen to have myths. The amazons appear in several myths with several queens. It's said that the stories of the Amazons might have been invented not to empower the woman’s right argument but to degrade it (Amazons). However evidence has been found that people fitting the description of the Amazons has been found. So these mythological freethinking woman may have once existed (Amazon Warriors Did Indeed Fight and Die Like Men). There are many other interesting facts about them. Such as the fact that the Amazons got their name from the greek word meaning “missing one breast” (Hercules' Ninth Labor: Hippolyte's Belt.).
