August 6th 1945, American B29 bomber dropped ‘little boy’ the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The Bomb destroyed 5 square miles and the centre of the explosion was said to be hotter than the surface of the sun. Three days later a second atomic bomb named ‘fat man’ was dropped on Nagasaki ending World War two with the Japanese surrender.
One of the causes for this was Japanese Expansion. On September 27, 1940, Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy, and they then became the military alliance known as the "Axis." One main reason for the expansion of the Japanese was because they were in desperate need of resources. The Germans were on the brink of creating the first atomic bomb. America was alerted that they were close and with the help of Albert Einstein they raced against the clock to win the atomic bomb race; this was called the Manhattan Project. This went on from 1942 to 1946. The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US$2 billion. There had been four cities chosen as possible targets, Hiroshima, Kokura, Nagasaki, and Niigata the reason these two cities were chosen was because they had been hardly touched by wars and battles, meaning they could test the atomic bomb to its full potential. If Japan had not bombed Pearl Harbour, then America would most likely not have destroyed their cities.
